2024 Toyota Sequoia Expert Review
Reviewed by Billy Rehbock
After the second-generation Toyota Sequoia came to a drawn-out end, the third-generation model burst onto the scene for the 2023 model year with fresh styling, modern drivetrains, and a slew of high-tech features. This year, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia receives more notable updates. Competitors include other full-size three-row SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon.

What We Think
After one of the longest production runs in recent automotive memory, the redesigned Toyota Sequoia has improved in most of the ways that its predecessor fell short. A modern, attractive exterior is complemented by an upscale, high-tech interior. Under the hood, there's a powerful yet efficient hybrid drivetrain. The Sequoia doesn't sacrifice third-row access either, a crucial trait for a vehicle in this segment to prioritize.
Still, Toyota overlooked some aspects of the Sequoia's development. We noted some clumsy on-road tendencies like abundant body roll, nose diving under braking, and body shudders over uneven pavement. Although acceleration is impressive within this class, the vehicle noticeably clunks into gear and the powertrain hesitates when the driver quickly transitions from the throttle to the brake. Mushy brake feel mars the experience.
Despite these weaknesses, the Toyota Sequoia serves as a versatile and fuel-efficient alternative to segment stalwarts. For people-hauling duty, we'd recommend shoppers take a look at the Sienna and Grand Highlander before signing on the dotted line; these models aren't quite as expensive and offer a lot of passenger space.
Performance and MPGs
Toyota equips the 2024 Sequoia with just one powertrain. A burly 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine pairs up with an electric motor and a 10-speed automatic transmission, sending 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels as standard or to an available four-wheel-drive system. According to our testing, 0-60 mph arrives in a brisk 5.6 seconds. Towing capacity is rated at a maximum of 9,520 pounds. Toyota's Tow Tech package bundles in features including a trailer backup guide and a steering assist feature to aid with maneuvering. The EPA rates the 2023 Sequoia at 19-21/22-24 mpg city/highway.
What Does the TRD Off-Road Package Include?
Toyota's TRD Off-Road Package equips SR5, Limited, and Platinum versions of the Sequoia with a selectable locking rear differential, terrain mode selector, Downhill Assist Control, and Crawl Control. Downhill Assist Control aids in creeping down steep grades while Crawl Control is a low-speed off-road cruise control that allows the driver to focus on steering inputs by taking over throttle management. Sequoia models equipped with this package also receive TRD-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers and springs, the Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system, a red front axle, and distinctive 18-inch wheels. Inside the cabin, the TRD Off-Road package outfits aluminum gas and brake pedals as well as a red TRD on/off button. New for 2024, Limited TRD Off-Road trims receive blacked-out exterior accents.
Active Safety Features
Every 2024 Sequoia comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite of active driver assistance features including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, lane centering, and traffic sign recognition. Other standard features that come equipped on all Toyota Sequoia models include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and parking sensors.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
Toyota offers the 2024 Sequoia with a choice of a second-row bench or captain's chairs depending on trim level. The third row reclines and boasts six inches of sliding capability (we noted third row cargo space as a range as a result of this feature). When the third row is collapsed, the Sequoia's removable shelf can be set up in different positions to accommodate cargo of various sizes. Although the Sequoia's interior accommodations are thoughtfully designed, its cabin isn't as spacious as some of its rivals.
Technology
Toyota equips the 2024 Sequoia with a standard 8.0-inch infotainment display or an available 14.0-inch unit. All models make use of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A fully digital 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is standard across the entire range. Other high-tech features include a digital display rearview mirror, a 360-degree camera, and trailer hitch view. Toyota offers built-in navigation as a subscription only.
Recommended Trim
The 2024 Sequoia is available in five trims this year: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Capstone. We recommend sticking with the Sequoia Limited for the best value. It builds on the basic SR5 with a hands-free power liftgate, a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a power folding third row, manual sunshades for the second and third rows, heated and ventilated front seats with memory settings, and a heated steering wheel.
