2027 Toyota Tundra First Look: New Trailhunter Trim, Standard 14-Inch Screen, and Safety Sense 4.0

We’re 4.5 years into the third-generation Toyota Tundra full-size pickup, and the truck is getting a good going over for the 2027 model year that brings modest styling tweaks, some major electronic architecture upgrades, and a Trailhunter variant to broaden the truck’s scope. Let’s dig into what’s new, what’s hot, and when to expect it.

Spotter’s Guide

Even avid fans may struggle to notice the new grille and front bumper details, bordered as they are by a carryover hood and headlamps. Toyota’s California-based CALTY studio says it went for a crisp, square, vertically aligned look, although to our eyes it looks more horizontal than before, as the new grille seems more clearly separated from the bumper. The grille surrounds formerly flowed down to become bumper overriders, but these functions are clearly separated now. Horizontal LED fog
lamps are now integrated into the grille (the design of which will still vary
with trim grade). Expect new wheel designs, too.

Tundra Trailhunter

This more overlanding-optimized alternative to TRD Pro has proven popular enough on the Tacoma and 4Runner to warrant application to the Tundra. But in contrast to those products, where it is reserved for application to top trim models only, the Tundra Trailhunter is based on the second-lowest variant, the SR5. Pricing won’t be announced until closer to the fall on-sale date, but it should help bring this package’s capability to a wider audience.

As in other Trailhunter models, the Tundra package brings with it an upgraded suspension with Old Man Emu shocks, additional underbody protection, front recovery hooks, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, a locking rear differential, and Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R18 tires on the unique bronze-colored wheels that, along with badging, distinguish any Trailhunter model.

Bigger, Widget-ier Screen

Modernized electronic architecture makes possible upgrades like the latest iteration of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, which incorporates AT&T 5G network connectivity. The puny old 8.0-inch infotainment screen is binned, so all grades now get the bigger 14.0-inch one, and now it’s more reconfigurable like a smartphone with customizable widgets for the home screen. There’s also an improved voice assistant ready to assist better and more quickly to “Hey, Toyota” prompts.

Other upgrades this electrical architecture brings include a standard built-in Drive Recorder Dash Cam that can capture 20-second clips of both manual and impact-triggered events, leveraging the exterior cameras. The digital key functionality is
upgraded to allow saving in compatible mobile device wallets and to allow
digital key sharing. When stored in a wallet, the digital key can communicate
via near-field communication (NFC) even after the device’s battery dies.

Safety Sense 4.0

One of the biggest upgrades is adoption of safety hardware and software that launched with the 2026 RAV4 and Lexus ES. The new system sharpens its capabilities with pre-collision pedestrian detection, full-speed dynamic adaptive cruise control,
more natural lane centering and lane-trace assist, better automatic high-beam
functionality, more accurate road-sign assistance, and improved proactive driving assistance.

Trim Grade Availability

As before, Tundra trim-grade availability spans a broad price range, spanning from
SR to SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, and the range-topping Capstone, and as noted above, the Trailhunter package will be available to SR5 buyers. Also unchanged are the powertrain offerings: base twin-turbo V-6 or available hybrid i-FORCE MAX V-6, backed by a 10-speed automatic. Stay tuned for more as we near the Tundra’s fall 2026 launch.
