A new Toyota Tacoma pickup truck is going on sale soon, and though the pickup tends to go through careful, gradual evolutions rather than full-on revolutions, the 2024 version marks a pretty serious departure from before. Every Tacoma is now turbocharged, for example, while upper-level models are also hybridized with electric assist. Beyond the lowliest 2024 Tacomas, the trucks also adopt a new coil-spring rear suspension. Oh, and Toyota's added two new trim levels to the lineup, bringing the total to eight. Here's a quick spin through the redesigned Tacoma family, from the base SR on up to the range-topping TRD Pro off-roader.

2024 Toyota Tacoma SR

The SR continues on as the Tacoma's entry-level trim, and though it's still basic and aimed at budget and commercial customers, it represents a huge step up over the outgoing Tacoma SR. Standard equipment includes a lower-output version of the new Tacoma's i-FORCE turbocharged 2.4-liter I-4 gas engine, here making only 228 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque—42 fewer hp and 22 fewer lb-ft than the same engine makes in the one-level-up SR5. Still, that much power splits the difference between the old Tacoma's non-turbo 2.4-liter I-4 and optional V-6.

Other highlights include an available six-speed manual transmission (crew cab only), standard active safety gear (adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and more), and those awesome steel wheels. The SR also uses leaf springs in the rear, instead of the coils on upper trims.

Key standard features:

  • Proximity key entry
  • LED exterior lighting
  • 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster display, 8.0-inch central touchscreen
  • 228-hp turbo I-4 gas engine

Available in XtraCab (extended cab) and Double Cab (crew cab) body styles, RWD or 4WD.

2024 Toyota Tacoma SR5

The SR5 trim is Toyota's volume seller, and it enjoys a few key upgrades over the lowly SR, from aluminum wheels to a higher-output version of the i-FORCE turbocharged engine. Here, the i-FORCE makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and crew-cab variants adopt the newer coil-spring rear suspension design.

Key standard features:

  • 17-inch aluminum wheels
  • Coil-spring rear suspension (Double Cab only)
  • 270-hp i-FORCE turbo engine

Available in XtraCab (extended cab) and Double Cab (crew cab) body styles, RWD or 4WD.

2024 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner

This is a new trim level for 2024, even if it leverages a name previously applied to Tacomas past: PreRunner. As with those older PreRunner models, the new Tacoma PreRunner is rear-wheel drive but with an off-road bent. All-terrain tires wrap 17-inch TRD wheels, the front suspension is lifted relative to non-PreRunner 2WD Tacomas, and a locking rear differential is included. Toyota is making this version available only in two-door XtraCab form (which means it makes do with a leaf-sprung rear axle) with the six-foot bed; inside, the space behind the two front seats is devoted to storage cubbies. PreRunners also utilize the higher-output i-FORCE engine, here making 278 hp and 317 lb-ft, improvements of 8 hp and 7 lb-ft over the SR5 spec.

Key standard features:

  • Toyota-branded Tokico twin-tube shocks
  • BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tires
  • Locking rear differential

Available in XtraCab (extended cab) and RWD only.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

The first of the Tacoma lineup's many TRD-branded (as in Toyota Racing Development) trim levels is the Tacoma TRD Sport, which carries a more street-ready design theme than the others. As on the previous-generation Tacoma TRD Sport, the new one wears a lot of body-color trim, saucier wheels, and a hood scoop. Each flank also wears "TRD Sport" stickers. The Sport also is among the few trims to offer a six-speed manual transmission, at least with the standard i-FORCE turbo engine. It's also the first Tacoma spec to offer the optional i-FORCE MAX hybrid setup, which adds electrification to the 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, and the first in the trim ladder with the digital gauge cluster and larger infotainment screen.

Key standard features:

  • Red-painted TRD shocks
  • 18-inch black and silver-finish TRD wheels
  • 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 8.0-inch touchscreen

Available in Double Cab (crew cab) only, RWD or 4WD

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

On the other side of the mid-tier TRD-branded Tacoma coin sits this, the TRD Off-Road. As its name implies, it's set up for getting dirty, but at a more reasonable price point than the range-topping TRD Pro. It comes with a complement of body armor and underbody skidplates, beefy tires, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear diff. Like the TRD Sport, the TRD Off-Road offers a six-speed manual transmission, albeit only on the non-hybrid i-FORCE engine. It offers an available front-axle anti-roll-bar disconnect and 33-inch tires (a Taco first).

Key standard features:

  • Bilstein monotube, remote-reservoir shocks
  • 17-inch TRD wheels
  • Skid plates
  • Electronically locking rear differential

Available in Double Cab (crew cab), 4WD only

2024 Toyota Tacoma Limited

This is the fancy cowboy in the Tacoma family, a luxury-minded midsizer to take on GMC's Canyon Denali and its ilk. The Tacoma Limited therefore includes shiny 18-inch wheels, silvery trim, and plenty of standard content. Full-time four-wheel-drive (as opposed to the part-time hardware included on every other four-wheel-drive Tacoma) is optional, even, although only with the also optional i-FORCE MAX hybrid (the turbo I-4 is standard). Electronically adaptive dampers are standard, too, along with a larger touchscreen, power-extending running boards, a driver's head-up display, heated and cooled front seats, and more.

Key standard features:

  • Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) electronic dampers
  • Larger 14.0-inch touchscreen
  • JBL audio system with removable portable speaker

Available in Double Cab (crew cab) only, RWD or 4WD

2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter

Another new trim level for 2024, the Tacoma Trailhunter sits near the head of the lineup, alongside the TRD Pro. Like that other burly truck, the Trailhunter is overtly off-road-focused, albeit with a specific lean toward overlanding adventures. As such, the most powerful Tacoma engine—the i-FORCE MAX hybrid setup—is standard and breathes in through a high-mount air intake (that snorkel you see above), as are Old Man Emu 2.5-inch monotube shocks with piggyback reservoirs, an ARB steel rear bumper and tow hooks, rock rails, high-clearance front bumper, bronze TRD wheels, and 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires. It can be further outfitted with adventure gear from the factory, including an ARB sport bar for both the 5- and 6-ft bed options.

Key standard features:

  • i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine
  • Front anti-roll-bar disconnect
  • RIGID fog lamps
  • 2,400-watt AC power inverter
  • Integrated air compressor
  • Hot stamped steel skid plates

Available in Double Cab (crew cab), 4WD only, available 5- or 6-ft bed.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

It's amazing how many different suspension setups Toyota has developed for the new Tacoma. Case in point, the TRD Pro, which gets 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass shocks with piggyback reservoirs (on the rears)—remember, the PreRunner gets Toyota-branded Tokicos, the Limited gets adaptive units, the TRD Off-Road has Bilsteins, the TRD Sport gets TRD sport-tuned pieces, and the Trailhunter sits on Old Man Emu shocks. Oh, and the XtraCab versions of the truck and lower-spec Double Cabs get leaf springs instead of the coils on everything else. Anyway, the TRD Pro shares billing with the Trailhunter as the Tacoma family's hardest-core off-roader, with the same front anti-roll-bar disconnect, locking rear diff, 33-inch Goodyear tires, ARB rear bumper, and more. It also gets the wild new IsoDynamic shock-absorber-equipped front seats standard.

Key standard features:

  • IsoDynamic shock-absorber front seats
  • 33-inch Goodyear R/T tires
  • 18-inch black-painted TRD wheels
  • "TOYOTA" grille lettering
  • Red forged aluminum upper front control arms
  • FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks
  • i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine

Available in Double Cab (crew cab), 4WD only.
