Vehicle Overview

On sale since the 2007 model year, the current-generation GMC Yukon has received modest updates each year. Two engines are available on the big, three-row SUV: a 320-hp 5.3-liter V-8 with 335 lb-ft of torque and a 403-hp, 417 lb-ft 6.2-liter V-8. Both engines are backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon is available in rear- or all-wheel drive. Fuel economy for the Yukon is rated 15/21 mpg city/highway for the 5.3-liter engine and 13-14/18 mpg for the 6.2-liter engine.

While we haven't driven the Yukon since it arrived in 2007 (with a four-speed automatic), we were impressed with the giant step forward from the previous generation: "The Yukon immediately impresses with classy ambience of the interior; exterior fit and finish is excellent-one of the best GMs on the road. Just wish we had E85 around here," Angus MacKenzie wrote. In our long-term test verdict, we said, "In the end, and after more than 20,000 miles of Los Angeles commuting, weekend trips up the coast, road-test chasing, a few vacations, and four separate photographic/video-crew hauls, the SUV served us well and held up like a champ."

While we haven't tested the big SUV with the six-speed automatic, during a quick test of the mechanically identical 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, we said, "The Tahoe also sports an old-school live axle, a feature that behooves off-road maneuvers but tends to degenerate on-road motions. Add in steering that was judged too light and not particularly communicative -- a 'Twirl-O-Matic' feel, according to St. Antoine -- and the Chevy's chassis was downgraded further." We concluded our test saying, "If you're looking for a solid off-road toy that's still laudable on-road, or a cavernous five-seat sport/ute that can swallow seven in a pinch, the Tahoe won't disappoint. But if you're looking for more from a three-row full-size SUV, like a higher tow rating than 6200 pounds, there are better options."

For 2014, the Convenience Package is now standard on SLE models and Deep Indigo Metallic is a new exterior paint color. The 2013 GMC Yukon SUV has a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and hasn't been evaluated by the IIHS.

New for 2014

Changes for 2014 are few; Deep Indigo Metallic has been added to the paint palette and the Convenience Package is now standard on the SLE trim.

The GMC Yukon is closely related to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade and features seating for up to nine passengers. Unlike the Tahoe, the Yukon is available with a Denali variant with a more powerful engine and a more upscale interior. A long-wheelbase variant called the Yukon XL is also available in standard and Denali trims.
