2024 GMC Hummer EV Expert Review

Curious about EVs but don't want some wimpy glorified golf cart? The 2024 GMC Hummer EV pickup is no electric lawn mower—it's a 9,000-pound behemoth that makes many other electric trucks look staid by comparison. This thing's a beast.

Curious about the Hummer EV SUV? We haveall the detailson that monster, too.

What's New

GMC reintroduced the Hummer nameplate for 2022 as its first electric vehicle. So far, it's only been offered with a 1,000-hp tri-motor setup, but based on what GMC has told us in the past, we're guessing 2024 will be the year GMC finally starts building the more affordable dual-motor models. This year also brings the first special edition variant with the Omega Edition.

What We Think

GMC's reimagined Hummer is a bonkers electric supertruck. Like the behemoth SUVs that established its namesake, this is an enormous, extremely heavy beast of a thing. It also happens to be exceptionally quick and equally impressive off-road as its ancestor.

The Hummer EV is dramatic—pitching, diving, and rolling through corners as it copes with the colossal forces that come with slinging around a nearly 10,000-pound pickup. But GMC's air suspension keeps the body under relative control, and the steering, though a bit lifeless, is confidently accurate. With the help of rear steering (and yes, Crab Walk), it's surprisingly maneuverable. During our 2024 Truck of the Year testing, we noted that it boasts confident towing capability. Uninspiring brakes may give you pause about driving it quickly, though.

As impressive as the view from the driver's seat can be with the massive hood and huge infotainment screens, cabin materials struggle to match the most expensive Hummers' six-figure price point, and we're disappointed to see some parts shared with the more pedestrian Sierra pickup. Road noise is also abysmal; passengers will have to shout to hear each other if the truck is traveling at highway speeds.

Compromised as it is, the Hummer EV is full of character and sure to put a smile on the face of any owner. Is it saving the world with electric power? Nah, it's likely one of the least efficient EVs on sale. But it is capable of convincing skeptics that EVs can be fun.

Power and Performance

So far, we've only seen GMC's craziest electric powertrain for the Hummer EV. We're talking three motors—one up front, two out back—developing 1,000 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. (No, it does not make 11,500 lb-ft like GMC claims.) That much power and traction is good for 0-60 mph in an astonishing 3.0 seconds.

Range and Charging

Although the mighty pickup hasn't yet been rated by the EPA, GMC estimates the electric truck can cover 329 miles in the Edition 1 and up to 381 miles in the 3X configuration. Also, thanks to its 800-volt electrical system, the Hummer EV can take advantage of the fastest 350-kW charging stations and add 100 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes. The battery is huge, though, so charging at home will take a while.

A Cheaper Hummer Pickup?

To date, GMC has only sold the Hummer EV pickup in Edition 1 and 3X trims, both of which utilize the powerful and pricey three-motor setup. That said, a two-motor 2X trim is set to arrive some time in 2023 for around $90,000, and an entry-level two-motor model should be introduced a year later in the $80,000 range. Those would be welcome additions, as a Hummer pickup we tested rang in at $112,595.

Technology and Driver Assist Features

All variants of the Hummer EV should continue to come standard with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment setup. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, and the infotainment system has apps for off-road information, energy consumption, and towing. A 14-speaker Bose audio setup is included on all trims.

All Hummer EVs come with a three-year trial of General Motors' excellent Super Cruise hands-free driver assist tech. In the Hummer, you can even pull off hands-free towing, though we'd be hesitant to tug too much with the vehicle's confidence-sapping brakes.

The 2024 Hummer EV Omega Edition

The Omega Edition is GMC's first special edition Hummer EV. Available as a pickup or SUV, the Omega Edition is based on the Hummer EV 3X with the Extreme Off-Road package. What sets this apart is the Neptune Blue paint as well as black exterior accents, and in the case of the SUV, buyers will see an embossed upper hemisphere of the planet Neptune on the rear spare tire cover. Pricing for the SUV starts at $139,995 and the pickup goes for an eye-watering $149,995.

GMC Hummer EV History

From the moment it went on sale, the Hummer began its descent into infamy. Early versions of the massive SUV were reviled for their abysmal fuel economy; Hummers were seen as four-wheeled manifestations of overconsumption. But for 2022 the Hummer nameplate was revived with a complete pivot—fuel economy was no longer a consideration. That's because it became an all-electric vehicle.
