GM Has Delayed Its Next-Gen Full-Size EV Trucks and SUVs

The Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Escalade IQ, and Hummer EV won’t get successors any time soon.

2026 has been a wild year so far for EVs. The year kicked off with muted demand thanks to the discontinuation of federal tax credits, changing federal regulations, and relatively cheap fuel. Continued consumer wariness due to the nascent charging infrastructure didn’t help. Then gas prices started going up thanks to conflict in the Middle East, making buyers reconsider fuel efficient vehicles such as hybrids and, yes, EVs. In all this tumult, we’ve learned of one constant: GM’s full-size electric pickup trucks and SUVs, which won’t be replaced any time soon.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, General Motors confirmed there won’t be a next-generation of its full-size EV trucks and SUVs in the immediate future. It stated that GM will instead focus on internal combustion engines and hybrid technology, citing poor sales of its EVs.

Reports of Their Death May Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

MotorTrend reached out to GM, and the company confirmed the move, but said the program is on hold with a new timeline known internally, “not canceled.” That said, it was unable to provide us with a specific timeline for restarting development of a successor platform. GM’s statement to MotorTrend continued: “GM has not canceled any electric trucks. EVs remain the end game for GM and we are firmly committed to our award-winning electric truck and SUV portfolio, along with our advanced technology roadmap.”

Another spokesperson told us that slow sales are the driver of this delay, saying, “Just look at the market.” This is somewhat puzzling given that in January, GM “wasn’t worried” about declining EV sales as it discussed its Q4 2025 financials. But it’s difficult to ignore the $3.3 billion in net income losses it had in the last quarter of 2025 due in part to EV sales slumping. That downturn is among the reasons the automaker reinvested in internal combustion engines (such as the sixth-generation small block V-8) and begun retooling plants for standard and hybrid vehicle production for North America.

A GM spokesperson confirmed that once EV sales rebound, the next-generation platform for these full-size electric pickups and SUVs will happen. They also confirmed that current-generation all-electric Silverado, Sierra, Hummer, and Escalade IQ models will continue being built and that suppliers are to continue producing parts “until we ask them to stop.” It’s unknown if that means production of the current models will continue longer than originally anticipated or be cut short.
