2027 Jaguar 4-Door GT Prototype First Drive: A 1,000-HP Trust Fall for the Jaguar Faithful
This Jag busts brand paradigms, but we think those who take the fall will like the landing.
Jaguar’s road to reinvention has been bumpy to put it mildly, after veering sharply off in a new design direction with its hot pink Concept 00. The uproar that brutalist concept unleashed resulted in the man responsible for it, Gerry McGovern, losing his job, as the brand faithful loudly fretted that Jaguar was abandoning its core values and heritage. Well, after a brief drive of some prototypes and an off-the-record peek at the final product, we’re prepared to reassure them this “four-door GT” (the naming ceremony is some weeks off) will not only be every inch a Jag, its development has been amply influenced by the brand’s great flagship “saloons.”

And there will be a lot of inches. Expect the brand’s flagship electric luxury sedan to be the length of a BMW 7 Series and the width of a Rolls-Royce Ghost, but with a nominal height that’s inches lower than most competitors. Exact dimensions and powertrain output figures are still under wraps, much like the camouflaged prototypes we recently sampled at Jaguar Land Rover’s REVI winter proving ground in Arjeplog, Sweden—aka, “the Nürburgring of winter testing.”
Many additional nitty-gritty details were shared at this event, and we refer you to our tech deep dive to revel in them. Here, let’s drive the car and try to answer the question: Can this big beast deliver the “grace, space, and pace” the brand faithful have come to expect?
Grace
Even with the camo on, the luxury-telegraphing dash-to-axle stretch is unmistakable. But don’t plan on stowing four passenger carryon bags under there. Nearly every cubic inch of space under that long hood is utilized to house things like batteries, inverters, and a vertically stacked front motor/drive unit.
Space
As has generally been the case through the last century, Jaguar has been a stylish choice with a more intimate interior, and this one continues in that vein. During our visit, the back seat of the prototype remained filled with gear and a test engineer, but it looked … cozy. Still, carving a void out of the underfloor battery pack to deepen the rear footwells should boost second-row comfort.
