Japanese Automakers Form CHAdeMO Association to Promote EV Charging Standards

Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Fuji Heavy Industries, and the Tokyo Electric Power Company have created the EV-friendly CHAdeMO Association to promote a standardized EV charging method to be used by automakers, suppliers, and utility companies worldwide.

Another important reason is to increase the number of quick charging stations located around the world. If you're wondering what CHAdeMO means, it's an abbreviation of the phrase "Charge de Move," or "charge for moving." It makes sense in Japanese too, where it's a pun for "O cha demo ikaga desuka," or "Let's have tea while charging."

The humanoid face smiles in anticipation of a bright future and has eyes represented by a battery circuit symbol (denoting 'charge') and a curve line, or mouth, representing "move." Green is, of course, the color of environmental mindfulness, as well as the color of green tea, a staple of Japanese cuisine.

Officials say 158 businesses and government bodies (20 of which are non-Japan-based entities) have already pledged their intentions to join the association. They represent automakers, charging service providers, charger manufacturers, and various supporting groups.

Expect more information to emerge as the formidable group gets the ball rolling on at least one aspect of future EV standardization.
