Forum Leaks Technical Specs for Toyota S-FR

An online forum has leaked technical specs for the Toyota S-FR sports car, which will make its debut in concept form at the Tokyo motor show in a few weeks. If the report is correct, we can expect the S-FR to pack a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder gas engine producing just 128 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque.

The 2NR-FKE engine, a tuned version of the one used on Japan's Corolla, is reportedly paired with a six-speed manual transmission and runs on regular gasoline. In total, the car is expected to weigh around 2,160 pounds and return 47 miles to the gallon. Note that all these specs reference the Japanese-market S-FR, which could look very different under the sheetmetal than a U.S. version should it head our way. Perhaps we would receive a more powerful engine and an optional automatic transmission.

It wouldn't be so unusual for the sports car to receive different tuning for different markets, as that's the case with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The Japanese-spec Miata, for instance, carries a 130-hp 1.5-liter engine compared to the U.S. model's 155-hp 2.0-liter engine. According to the forum, the estimated price for the S-FR in Japan is expected to come in $10,000 less than the current Miata. That means Japanese customers are looking at a low $12,500 price tag for the S-FR including tax.

For now, all Toyota has confirmed is that the rear-drive S-FR concept will "offer smooth, responsive, and direct handling that gives a real sense of communication between car and driver." We'll just have to wait to learn more about the new compact sports car when it debuts as a concept at the Tokyo motor show alongside the FCV Plus and KIKAI concepts.
