2028 Range Rover GT First Look: Range Rover’s Sleek, Electrified Grand Tourer

Land Rover has been promising an electric vehicle (EV) under its Range Rover brand for a few years now. But even as OEMs slowly drop EV options in the U.S., Land Rover is finally letting the cat out of the bag and showing off the 2028 Range Rover GT, which will be the fifth model from the luxury SUV brand. It’s also the first LR vehicle built on the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, and it will have the flexibility to be both a battery EV and a hybrid. It’s still being tested and remains under camouflage, but Land Rover is giving us the first glimpse of what the GT will deliver when it arrives next year.

At first glance, the 2028 Range Rover GT immediately gives you the sense that it isn’t a traditional Land Rover–based SUV. It shows the influence of the designers behind the Jaguar GT Prototype in its body shape, looking more like a tall wagon than an SUV. That impression is especially clear in the coupe-like slope past the C-pillar and in the way the roofline sits rather low compared to its overall body length, which is nearly the same as the Range Rover Sport’s.

Inside, the GT is another area that steps away from much of the traditional Range Rover design. The cabin is intended to be a welcoming, clutter-free space that helps keep occupants calm and relaxed during long-haul drives. Reducing the interior’s acoustic noise was also a focus, not only to provide a luxurious experience but also to help the GT understand clear, conversational instructions to its onboard systems. And all of that is what makes the GT a modernized grand tourer, according to Land Rover.

But you’ll still find the horizontal design that has always defined Range Rover vehicles in the GT’s cabin. Singular woven textiles wrap each layer of the dashboard and help conceal the speakers for the front passenger area. Also hidden is the air vent that channels HVAC airflow across the entire width of the cabin. The digital instrument cluster is a single screen that helps keep the driver’s eyes forward by simplifying the display and positioning it closer to the lower edge of the windshield.

When the 2028 Range Rover GT launches from the Halewood, U.K., plant, it will come only as an all-electric vehicle. The EMA platform, however, gives Land Rover the option to build the GT as a hybrid, and that’s planned for later in its lifecycle. Just when that will happen has not been hinted at by JLR, which promises more information on the 2028 GT later this year.
