Why Lamborghini Won't Attempt a Nürburgring Lap Record With the Revuelto SV

With the Revuelto as Lamborghini’s current V-12 flagship, it was only a matter of time before the 2027 Lamborghini Revuelto SV showed up. Slightly more powerful but with gobs of aerodynamic and suspension technology, the SV follows in the tradition of many similarly track-focused predecessors. However, and perhaps surprisingly, Lamborghini says it will not be pursuing a Nürburgring lap record with the SV.

The Revuelto SV’s press materials prominently show the car lapping at Germany’s Hockenheimring. When asked during a recent preview event in New York City whether the automaker would attempt a record at the famed Green Hell, Lamborghini Revuelto product line director Alessandro Farmeschi said, “No, not really, no. We use Nürburgring for testing. We chose Hockenheimring because ... the point is we wanted to give our customers a reference point that could also be replicated by [them]. Nürburgring is a bit of a peculiar circuit. Hockenheimring, instead, is a shape and a length that” is more approachable in terms of length and difficulty.

It’s true Hockenheimring’s 2.8-mile layout is shorter than the Nürburgring’s 12.9-mile length. And the circuit is probably more approachable as well, which is good for owners that perhaps don’t have extensive track experience. But the fact that Lamborghini likely won’t attempt any ’Ring record at all is unexpected, especially because the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and Huracán Performante notably both set records of their own there.

A cynic might think Lamborghini is focusing on the Hockenheimring instead of the Nürburgring because it paints the Revuelto SV in a better light. Indeed, Lamborghini said the Revuelto SV had achieved a Hockenheim Grand Prix circuit lap of 1 minute, 41.6 seconds on August 6 and called it the “fastest lap ever recorded by a production car at the Hockenheimring”—extremely impressive, although still technically behind the Mercedes-AMG One’s 1 minute, 38.6 second lap from 2022.

However! “Our claim refers specifically to the Revuelto SV as the fastest production super sports car at Hockenheim,” a Lamborghini spokesperson elaborated to MotorTrend via email. “The AMG One is a limited-production hypercar, with a fundamentally different technical concept, production volume, and price positioning.”

The AMG also went on to set a new ’Ring record in 2024, and for what it’s worth, we don’t see much difference between a “super sports car” and a hypercar, nor do we begrudge the AMG production status.

While we’d love to see Lamborghini duke it out with Mercedes-AMG, it currently appears unlikely to happen. Regardless, the Lambo rep is right that the Revuelto SV will be more affordable and numerous than the Mercedes, never a bad thing even if its well-heeled customers still live in rarified air we’ll never breathe.
