2028 Range Rover GT: What We Know About the Smaller, Sportier Range Rover

What It Is

The 2028 Range Rover GT will be the most carlike Range Rover in the automaker’s history. The compact luxury SUV is expected to launch in the U.S. as an all-electric model, with a hybrid version arriving later. It will also be the first vehicle built on Jaguar Land Rover’s new Electrical Modular Architecture, or EMA.

Why It Matters

Land Rover has been reshuffling its lineup. The automaker recently discontinued the Discovery Sport, leaving an opening for a smaller SUV. JLR has also reorganized its portfolio into four distinct brands: Jaguar, Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery.

The GT will become the fifth member of the Range Rover family. Despite its more compact dimensions, we expect it to slot between the Velar and Range Rover Sport in the lineup, largely because of its electric powertrain and expected price.

Land Rover already has prototypes testing around the world, suggesting we could see the production model within months. The automaker has also released a handful of interior images showing a minimalist but upscale design, including the brand’s new logo.

From the outside, there is little doubt the GT will resemble a lifted grand tourer. We expect Range Rover’s clean, elegant styling to carry over to the newest member of the family, this time paired with a lower roofline and sportier proportions. Buyers looking for a more dynamic take on a Range Rover should find plenty to like.

Platform and Powertrain

The GT will be the first Range Rover based on EMA, a flexible platform designed to support both all-electric and hybrid powertrains. Although details such as battery capacity and driving range remain under wraps, we know the GT will launch as an EV, with a hybrid model following later. Production will take place at JLR’s Halewood plant in England.

We expect several configurations to be offered, with a dual-motor layout likely serving as the standard setup and at least two battery sizes available to suit different buyers. We also expect EMA to support an 800-volt electrical architecture, which should allow for quick charging speeds.

With hybrid demand surging in the U.S., JLR may want to bring that version stateside sooner rather than later.

For now, the Range Rover GT appears to have few direct competitors. The Genesis GV60 and its high-performance Magma variant could overlap with it, though without final specifications or dimensions, it is difficult to know how closely they will compare. The Tesla Model Y and Model Y Performance could also emerge as rivals.
