10 Off-Road RVs and 4x4 Camper Vans That Deliver Luxury Glamping Off the Beaten Path
Stay civilized while leaving civilization behind in these ultra-capable rigs.

It’s never been easier to throw everything into a camper, slip into the lap of luxury, and leave the world behind—as long as you have six figures sitting around to pick up a converted van, truck, or custom overlanding rig. There are many appealing choices out there for those with cash to burn and a hankering to head for the horizon. The inclusion of four-wheel drive, a rugged suspension, and days of power and water on tap is for those who don’t plan on seeing any familiar faces, or even using any roads, on their next trip.
Here’s a look at 10 unstoppable all-terrain campers that leverage their off-road acumen to transport adventurous owners nearly anywhere they can imagine.

Outside Van Baseline
The Baseline from Outside Van is just what it sounds like: a blank slate onto which overlanders can paint as much, or as little, adventure gear as they desire. What makes the Outside Van Baseline more appealing than simply picking up a used people-mover and going full DIY? The company takes care of installing the bedrock of any camping conversion, including flooring, insulation, wall panels, ceiling vents, windows, a sleeping platform, and all of the chassis and body modifications necessary to support this on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4x4.
Once that’s in place, customers can decide how much farther they want Outside Van to go, and how much customization they plan to take care of themselves.

ModVans CV1/X
The Ford Transit–based CV1/X is an intriguing off-the-grid update to the company’s popular CV1 conversion. The “X” denotes the inclusion of a LiFePO4 battery system, which comes in both 13-kWh and 26-kWh specs. ModVans claims you can’t get more power from an RV in its class and that it’s enough juice to keep you adventuring in the all-wheel-drive van for weeks at a time without having to recharge.
Somewhat unusually, the ModVans CV1/X is designed so that its camping gear can be completely removed from the interior, allowing it to be used as a traditional cargo van when desired.

Sportsmobile Chevrolet Express
Sportsmobile has made a name for itself keeping the torch alive for both the Ford E-Series van as well as the Chevrolet Express. In the latter’s case, Sportsmobile will either take an Express that you bring to it for modification or provide its own four-wheel-drive conversion for the vehicle.
Featuring a selection of easy-to-maintain LS-family V-8 engines, the Sportsmobile Chevrolet Express is offered in both regular and extended body editions, each of which preserves the more manageable low roof design until it’s time to lift up the available “penthouse” pop-top.

Tiffin GH-1
Taking a break from building the kind of earth-shaking behemoths that rule the campsite, Tiffin has launched the more manageable GH-1. Sitting on the popular Sprinter platform, the van offers all-wheel drive, Fox shocks front and rear, and BF Goodrich T/A KO2 tires as standard equipment. Solar power is also along for the ride (along with multiple energy storage options), and you can opt for StarLink internet for mobile downloads in the middle of nowhere.

Tiger Adventure Vehicles Panthera
Riding on the back of a Ford F-350 chassis, the Tiger Adventure Vehicles Panthera provides an aluminum shell stuffed with lithium-ion portable power, solar charging, and insulation to keep you protected from both the heat and the cold. Base engines start with a gas-powered V-8, but a turbodiesel is optional if you want to take full advantage of the Panthera’s towing capabilities.
Unlike other on-bed campers, the Panthera (LT and HD models also available) is built with a full passthrough to the cab of the truck, making it a more versatile solution while in motion. It’s also worth nothing that you can trade the small dinette table for a full-size couch that folds out into a bed, doubling the number of people who can sleep inside the camper.

Winnebago 4x4 Revel 44E
Winnebago has recently updated its popular Revel 4x4 camper van. Based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the new 44E is designed to take two explorers far off the beaten path, all while coddling them in luxury. Featuring a torquey and efficient turbodiesel engine, it’s good for 20 mpg in highway driving, and you can even spec it with optional BF Goodrich T/A KO2 tires.
The Revel 44E also offers a wet bath inside and a washing station outside so you can keep both yourself and the interior from getting too muddy. Lurking underneath the sleeping area at the back is a hidden storage compartment that’s accessible via a power lift function for the bed.

EarthRoamer LTi
EarthRoamer is one of the biggest names in over-the-top off-road campers, and the LTi is its entry-level option—as much as that term can be applied to a vehicle that costs nearly three-quarters of a million dollars. Sitting on an F-550 chassis, the LTi swaps the aluminum and plastic of its rivals for a carbon-fiber monocoque body, making it both strong and light.
The ultra-rugged camper rides on 43-inch Goodyear tires that the company claims are “military grade,” and in addition to its luxurious interior trappings, the LTi can haul 100 gallons of drinking water, 95 gallons of diesel fuel, and 12 kWh of electricity (in its lithium-ion battery bank). EarthRoamer’s LTi was discontinued in November 2024 and has been replaced by the LTx model.

Krug Expedition Bedrock XT2
Produced in partnership with the same adventure-seeking engineers behind the Arctic Trucks brand of polar exploration vehicles, the Krug Expedition Bedrock XT2 represents the European company’s first real foray into the American market.
This six-wheeled beast is based on the Ford F-550, which gives it plenty of room for things like hydroponic underfloor heating, a water purification system for its 118-gallon storage tank, and even an outdoor kitchen that can slide out of storage at a moment’s notice. Designed for self-sufficiency, the XT2 is built out of composite materials for both strength and weather resistance.

Storyteller GVX Epic
You might be surprised to find out there’s an even more ostentatious way to spend $690,000 in the world of 4x4 adventure vehicles. The Storyteller GVX Epic earns its name with its unabashed Kenworth truck roots and its massive proportions, providing more than 30 feet of camper for you to crash in at the end of a long day’s exploration. With two locking differentials, 44-inch Goodyear tires, and an 18,000-pound winch, the only real restriction on your itinerary will be fitting the Storyteller under any rock arches you might encounter off-road.
With a rig as large as the Epic, there’s really no need to leave any comforts at home—and with 18 kWh of electrical storage on board (along with 1,980 watts of solar generating capability), you can keep all your gadgets running as long as you want. The four-wheel-drive GVX is designed with security (with a 360-degree, one-touch spotlight system as standard equipment), as well as stargazing (thanks to an opening skylight over the rear sleeping area) in mind. There’s even a washer/dryer installed under the cabinets, and a shower with a pop-up skylight of its own to accommodate 6-footers.

EarthRoamer SX
EarthRoamer’s most opulent offering is the SX, a Chevrolet 6500–based camper that amplifies everything the LTi had to offer, pushing out its interior in every dimension and adding a substantial degree of self-contained power, cooking, and plumbing that can keep owners away from civilization for weeks at a time. Each SX is custom-built to order, with four different floorplans available as starting points, and it’s one of the most luxurious conversions on the market.
Key off-road gear for the EarthRoamer SX includes 43-inch tires mounted on beadlock wheels, a 16,500-pound winch, and extensive LED lighting front and rear. The rig is motivated by a mighty turbodiesel V-8 that offers 700 lb-ft of torque, making it virtually unstoppable no matter how gnarly conditions might get. EarthRoamer also claims its SX campers actually appreciate instead of depreciate, touting them as “investments” that you can also sleep in and drive.
