Shopping for a Nissan Pathfinder? This Is the Trim We’d Get.
The Pathfinder’s family-friendly sweet spot best mixes affordability and features.
The Nissan Pathfinder is one of the brand’s bestselling vehicles in the U.S., with annual sales exceeding 100,000 units, and has long been a key model in its overall lineup. And for the 2026 model year, Nissan added several new features to the Pathfinder mix to help keep its family-friendly three-row SUV competitive in a crowded segment.

With prices starting at $41,535 and climbing into the low-$50,000 range, the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder lineup itself consists of the SV, SL, Rock Creek, and Platinum trims. Offering seating for seven or eight passengers, the Pathfinder continues to be a solid choice for families seeking a practical three-row SUV. While cargo space behind the third row is somewhat limited, there’s still enough room to handle most everyday hauling needs.
Every Pathfinder is powered by a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V-6 producing 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel drive is available across the lineup. Depending on the configuration, fuel economy is rated at 20–21 mpg in the city and 23–27 mpg on the highway.
With new vehicle prices continuing to climb, finding an affordable SUV that can comfortably and safely transport the whole family, all while offering a wealth of key features, is becoming increasingly difficult. The Nissan Pathfinder checks many of those boxes, but not every trim is equally well suited for budget-conscious shoppers. Here’s a closer look at which version offers the best value for families watching their spending.
The Nissan Pathfinder Trim to Get
If it were our money, we’d choose the Nissan Pathfinder SL (Note: A Pathfinder Platinum trim is pictured). Positioned one step above the base SV, the SL starts at $44,585, a relatively modest increase that brings a substantial jump in features and amenities. For families seeking the best balance of value, comfort, and convenience, it’s the sweet spot of the Pathfinder lineup.
For 2026, the Pathfinder SL gains a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, replacing the SV’s smaller display and analog speedometer with a more modern setup. A 12.3-inch touchscreen also comes standard, adding wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SL is also available in either seven- or eight-passenger configurations. Buyers who opt for the seven-seat layout get second-row captain’s chairs, which provide additional comfort and personal space for passengers. Those chairs can also slide and tilt forward, making it easier for third-row occupants to get in and out.
The Pathfinder SL is also a smart choice for budget-conscious families thanks to its relatively efficient fuel economy for a gas-powered SUV. Front-wheel-drive models are rated at 20/27 mpg city/highway, while all-wheel-drive versions return 21/27 mpg. Those figures won’t set any records, but they compare favorably with other Pathfinder trims, such as the Rock Creek and Platinum, helping owners save money at the pump over time.
On the safety front, every Pathfinder comes standard with Nissan’s ProPilot Assist suite of driver assists and safety systems, including the automaker’s adaptive cruise control. Together, these systems can help reduce driver fatigue on long highway trips by letting them take their hands off the wheel momentarily on portions of certain highways.
All things considered, the Pathfinder SL offers a solid mix of features that most families want, the space they need, and the technology and safety equipment they expect—all without venturing into premium-price territory. If you’re shopping for a three-row SUV and want the most Pathfinder for your money, the SL is the one to get.
