2024 Ram ProMaster EV Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
Ram might be known for its trucks, but the brand's first available electric workhorse is the ProMaster EV commercial van. It supplements the lineup's V-6 models and rolls out in two configurations, a delivery model and a slightly heavier-duty cargo variant. This is not a crowded space, but two big van competitors are the Ford E-Transit and Mercedes-Benz eSprinter .

What's New
The ProMaster received significant upgrades in the previous two model years that included exterior styling, powertrain, and technology improvements. For 2024, the all-electric ProMaster EV joins the lineup.
What We Think
We are looking forward to seeing what quick and quiet electric propulsion will add to the ProMaster work van formula. The gas lineup earns praise for its smart interior layout as well as good available technology and safety features, many which are standard on the ProMaster EV. It'll hopefully be quicker than the gas model and will ultimately be offered in several configurations.
Currently, the ProMaster EV is offered only with front wheel drive—Ford has the rear-drive E-Transit if that's more your jam. No work van looks especially comely, but the ProMaster's exterior styling is particularly frumpy, and the EV inherits that. Aside from these minor downsides, the ProMaster EV has potential. We'll have to take it for a spin before we can issue our final opinion.
Performance, Range, and Charging
As with the gas version, the ProMaster EV is front-wheel drive. Its 110-kWh battery and motor are good for 268 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque. That's not too far off from the gas model's 276 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The delivery variant can haul up to 2,030 pounds of payload and the cargo model is rated for 3,020 pounds.
Ram pegs range at 162 miles on a full charge, which may not seem like much but is about right for the class. Ford estimates a maximum range of 126 miles for the E-Transit, and Rivian's electric delivery van is said to return around 150-160 miles. The ProMaster EV is Level 2 and Level 3 capable, with charging speeds up to 150 kW on the Level 3.
Safety
Every ProMaster EV features Ram's Park Sense rear parking sensors with automatic emergency braking, a forward collision warning, Crosswind Assist, driver focus and traffic sign monitors, automatic high-beams, and cornering lights. All 2024 ProMasters, gas or electric, also come with a standard high-resolution backup camera and an available digital rearview mirror. Optional features include lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, forward parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and Active Driving Assist.
Cargo Space
The 2024 ProMaser EV will eventually be available in five configurations that include two roof heights, two cargo lengths (12 feet and 13.5 feet), and two body styles. Both ride on the lineup's 159-inch wheelbase. Ram touts a cargo volume of 524 cubic feet for the electric van.
The ProMaster generally is available in three different wheelbases and with a low or high roof. Ram also builds a window van version of the gas model in a single long-wheelbase, high-roof configuration.
ProMaster EV Versus the Electric Competition
The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and high-roof version of the Ford E-Transit offer about the same cargo space, 488 and 487.3 cubic feet, respectively. That gives the ProMaster EV roughly a 36-cube advantage.
As for relative payload capacities, the Mercedes' max of 2,624 pounds splits the difference between the capacities of the ProMaster EV's delivery and cargo models. The Ford's payload tops out at 3,800 pounds.
Technology
A 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air updates are standard on the 2024 ProMaster EV. A charging locator and trip planning software are also integrated with Uconnect, and there are standard 12-volt and USB ports in the dash. On the delivery model, a heated steering wheel and heated windshield are standard. A wireless phone charger and 115-volt household-type power outlet are optional.
