2026 MINI Cooper Hardtop Expert Review
Reviewed by Billy Rehbock
The automotive landscape would be a lot less cheerful without the 2026 Mini Cooper Hardtop. A true compact hatchback, the Cooper Hardtop is vehicular self-expression made manifest. For 2026, Mini offers the John Cooper Works (JCW) Style package to all S models and makes new cosmetic enhancements available.
Offered in both two- and four-door body styles, the 2026 Mini Cooper Hardtop competes with a variety of small hatchbacks like the Volkswagen GTI, Toyota Corolla, and the Fiat 500e.

What We Think
Blending classic styling and modern technology, the 2026 Mini Cooper Hardtop navigates the modern world with the charm that has made it a motoring icon. The models we’ve tested exhibit balanced handling with strong brakes and a refined ride.
The cabin is cheerful, and the front row makes efficient use of its space. John Cooper Works models are still a hoot, with lots of torque and great transmission tuning, but they sacrifice some ride comfort for the sake of driving dynamics.
The round touchscreen is intuitive and responsive, though CarPlay appears in rectangular form within the circular display, which feels suboptimal. Other features, like the ambient lighting that projects subtle patterns on the dash, feel downright futuristic.
Mini’s bid to embrace tech-focused design trends has seen the Cooper hardtop lineup lose much of its manual driving fun. Coopers are now automatic only, with gear selection via a stubby toggle; paddle shifters are restricted to the upper trims. Cooper S models could use more grip and more pep, too.
Still, even though some of the hotness has been sapped from the Mini Cooper Hardtop’s lineage, the shift toward modernity has made the small hatchback a better car overall for today’s world.
Top-Ranked Competitors:
MotorTrend Tested
The base 2026 Mini Cooper powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four developing 161 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Mini says this model is good for a 0–60-mph time of 7.4 seconds.
Those who want more pep should spring for the Cooper S, which also uses a 2.0-liter turbo and a seven-speed DCT but sees output rise to 201 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, enabling a MotorTrend-tested 0–60-mph time of 5.9 seconds in two-door guise and 6.1 seconds in the four-door configuration.
At the top of the range, Mini offers the John Cooper Works variant of its hatchback, which receives a further output bump to 228 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Mini says this model can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, but we expect that number to fall as low as 5.7 seconds when we get the chance to do our testing.
MPGs and Range
For 2025, the EPA rates the base Mini Cooper Hardtop at 28/39 mpg city/highway with 371 miles of range. Despite increased power, S models see identical fuel economy and range, and the higher-performance JCW variant is only a smidge less efficient, with 27/37 mpg and 348 miles of range.
Safety Features
Available in addition to the standard suite of driver assistance equipment, the Driving Assistant Plus package bundles camera and radar-based steering assistance with lane keep assistance. Optional Parking Assistant Plus detects and maneuvers into open parking spaces. Adaptive cruise control is included on the highest trim.
- Automatic emergency braking
- Lane departure warning
- LED headlights with cornering lights
- Front and rear parking sensors
Cargo Space and Interior Room
As a truly compact hatchback, the Mini Cooper Hardtop has a tight second row and a smaller trunk than its rivals.
Technology
Infotainment
The 2026 Mini Cooper Hardtop’s 9.4-inch circular central display is unique in the segment. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard along with navigation and Mini’s Augmented View traffic information.
Using the Mini Operating System 9, the infotainment system has standard voice commands, over-the-air updates, and digital key functionality. The central display functions as an instrument cluster, but all models also receive a head-up display to help keep the driver’s eyes on the road. Wireless charging is standard.
Sound System
A six-speaker sound system is standard in the 2025 Mini Cooper Hardtop. A 12-speaker arrangement from Harman Kardon is available as an upgrade.
Mini Experience Modes
The 2026 Cooper Hardtop is a standout in its class with its available twin projectors that can display subtle graphics on the dashboard and door trim. This technology, part of the Mini Experience Modes feature, can be personalized in the Mini app.
Value
Standard Features
Mini offers the most basic Cooper Hardtop Signature with a choice of four colors, 17-inch wheels, and piano black exterior accents. Inside the cabin, there’s a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a round touchscreen with navigation, and a head-up display.
Recommended Trim
Mini offers the 2026 Cooper Hardtop as a two-door or four-door hatchback. Two-door models can be had with base, S, and JCW powertrains; four-door models are only offered with the choice of base or S. Regardless of powertrain, Mini offers the Cooper Hardtop in Signature, Signature Plus, and Iconic trims.
Although we love the JCW’s output, its suspension is too harsh for comfortable daily driving. We think the 2026 Mini Cooper S 4 Door with the Iconic trim and the new JCW Style package is the best buy.
Not only is this model more luxurious than lower trims, it also receives features enthusiasts love, like paddle shifters and adaptive dampers, which balance comfort and sportiness well. It’s a good blend of premium appeal and sporty character, and ideal for regular use.
Pricing begins around $39,000 for the Mini Cooper S 4 Door Iconic trim, and the addition of the JCW Style package brings that sum up to just over $40,000.
Where Is the Electric Mini Cooper Hardtop?
BMW’s plan to produce a pair of Mini EVs has been delayed indefinitely, citing “multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry,” according to the BBC. Whenever it arrives, the all-electric Mini Cooper E is set to develop 184 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque, and the SE will develop 218 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque.
A small 40.7-kWh battery will pair with the Cooper E, and the SE will get a larger 54.2 kWh battery. Charging from 10 percent to 80 percent should take 30 minutes.
JCW variants of the electric Mini Cooper Hardtop won’t be any more powerful than their gas-only siblings. Instead, the all-electric Mini Cooper JCW is slated to receive cosmetic changes such as sportier wheels, aero accents, model-specific headlights, and more red cabin accents than the Cooper E and SE.
