2022 Lamborghini Urus Expert Review
Reviewed by Duncan Brady
Looking for something with design that harkens back to legendary wedge-shaped supercars like the Lamborghini Countach but can also carry a family of four? There's only one option: the Urus. The Italian exotic-builders at Lamborghini introduced the Urus as its first SUV for 2019 and it quickly became the brand's best seller. It competes with other high-dollar, high-performance SUVs including the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, Bentley Bentayga Speed, and Aston Martin DBX.
What We Think
Skeptics will be quick to point out the commonalities between the Urus and its Volkswagen Group siblings; is it even a real Lamborghini? Get behind the wheel and the answer is clear. Absolutely.
The Urus is blisteringly quick, with its 3.0-second 0-60 mph time making it the quickest SUV we've ever tested. The big girl handles, too; its lap of our figure-eight course is second only to the mighty Cayenne Turbo GT. Lamborghini's enormous carbon-ceramic brakes provide outstanding braking power and the clever air suspension and four-wheel steering consistently improve the driving experience. The 2023 Urus Performante provides even more handling precision.
Not just that, the Urus is also an excellent SUV for driving around town. The V-8 is pleasingly docile when you're trundling along through traffic and will happily wake up to deliver all 641 Italian thoroughbreds. Lamborghini's take on the SUV blends the luxury and creature comforts of a flagship Porsche or Audi with the exceptional AWD handling of a Nissan GT-R. Whether you buy it to flex in Beverly Hills or bomb through the canyons, the Urus is a willing and able companion.
What Engine Is in the Lambo SUV?
The Urus is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 tuned by the brilliant engineers at Porsche Motorsports. In this application, it's been tuned to deliver 641 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, which makes the Urus more powerful than Lamborghini's own Huracan. The V-8 is paired with an eight-speed automatic sending power to all four wheels.
How Fast Is the Lamborghini Urus?
If we're talking top speed, Lamborghini claims the Urus is good for a healthy 190 mph, making it one of the fastest SUVs on sale. In terms of acceleration, we tested an Urus hitting 60 mph in a super-like 3.0 seconds and running through the quarter-mile mark in 11.3 seconds at 120.1 mph.
Fuel Economy As Bad As You'd Expect
No one's buying an Urus for its fuel-sipping capabilities, but even owners with deep pockets may take issue with the Lamborghini SUV's limited range. Efficiency numbers read 12/17 mpg city/highway, and even with a 19.8-gallon gas tank, EPA-rated combined range is only 277 miles. That's right; this gas-powered SUV has less range than some EVs.
The Cheapest Lamborghini
Even though it has twice as many seats as a Huracan or an Aventador, the Urus will make a smaller dent in your foreign bank account than either of those other Lamborghinis. The Lamborghini SUV starts around $225,000, but the last one we had at the office also had over $50K in options. Cheap for a Lamborghini, sure, but far from cheap.
