2024 Jeep Wagoneer Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
The 2024 Wagoneer is among the biggest and most premium SUVs you can get from Jeep. It's offered with seating for seven or eight and available in standard and long-wheelbase formats that are a foot longer. Big three-row competitors include the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition .
What's New
Introduced for 2022, the Wagoneer received a long-wheelbase model, Carbide package, and turbo inline-six engine for 2023 while its V-8 powertrain was discontinued. For 2024, the Wagoneer carries over unchanged.
What We Think
The Wagoneer is a gem. It checks off a lot of big SUV boxes, such as a capable power- and drivetrain, excellent cabin space and packaging, even off-road chops (as it should—it's a Jeep). It may not be the most dynamically superior entrant compared to others in the class, but it can hold its own, especially now that it's standard with a more powerful turbo six-cylinder.
On Jeep's available air suspension, the Wagoneer transforms into a cushy cruiser, and that's more its vibe. It boasts a well-built, high-quality interior that features big screens and upscale upholstery and details.
Though modern, competent, and premium feeling, the next-level-up Grand Wagoneer is ultimately more so. Regardless of model, no Wagoneer returns what we'd characterize as decent fuel economy. We're anxious to hear more about the battery electric version the brand supposedly has in the pipeline for 2025.
Performance and MPGs
Both Wagoneer and Wagoneer L models employ a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six Jeep calls the Hurricane Twin Turbo. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the powertrain produces the same output as last year's model, 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. The lower trims are offered in RWD and 4WD configurations, and the Series III top model is available only with 4WD.
Fuel economy is understandably less than optimal but about what we'd expect for an SUV weighing over three tons. The 2024 Wagoneer RWD receives ratings of 17/24 mpg city/highway and the Wagoneer 4WD does slightly worse, 16/23 mpg city/highway. These estimates cover the heavier long-wheelbase models, too.
At least the Wagoneer can move in a hurry. We've launched a 2023 Wagoneer L Series II 4WD to 60 mph in an impressive 5.5 seconds, more than 2 seconds quicker than a V-8 2022 version.
Towing
Trailer sway control is standard on every 2024 Wagoneer, and with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package, Jeep's big SUV is rated for a maximum towing weight of 10,000 pounds. The equipment group unlocks a two-speed transfer case, 3.92:1 final drive ratio, electric limited-slip differential, integrated trailer brake control, improved engine cooling, and front and removable rear tow hooks. Selec-Speed Control is also included, which is designed to regulate vehicle speed when ascending or descending hills.
What Is the Carbide Package?
Carbide is what Jeep calls the Wagoneer's black-out package and it's available on the Series II model. Exterior tweaks include painted 20-inch gloss black wheels, piano black exterior accents, a three-pane panoramic sunroof, and adjustable roof rack crossbars. The cabin gets black accents, too, as well as a cargo cover and reversible cargo mats.
Safety Features
Active driver assist features are practically fundamental on such a sizable SUV. Standard Wagoneer technology includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, hill start assist, and parking sensors. Series II models get adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, and automatic high beams are unlocked on the Series III. A driver focus warning can be unblocked through available package.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
A second-row bench is the Wagoneer's default seating setup. The SUV can be outfitted with midship captain's chairs for a reduced maximum occupancy of seven. Either way, every seat feels spacious. Cargo room is generous but the 2023 Chevy Suburban offers more behind its second and third rows than the big-boy Wagoneer L.
Technology
Every 2024 Wagoneer features standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, nine-speaker Alpine audio, and a 10.3-inch gauge cluster display. Powered, heated, and ventilated front seats are standard, as are eight USB ports, a power tilting and telescoping steering column, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Series II middle models score a wireless phone charger and rain-sensing wipers. On the top Series III trim, heated second-row seats are standard.
A 19-speaker McIntosh sound system and power-deployable running boards (for the Series III only) are available via package. A front passenger screen and dual 10.1-inch rear seat screens are other options.
Trim Levels and Pricing
The 2024 Wagoneer and Wagoneer L are available in three trims this year: base, Series II, and Series III. Jeep is also offering the $3,695 Carbide package for the Series II. Pricing starts at just above $64,900 for the base RWD standard wheelbase and exceeds $84,400 for the Wagoneer L Series III.
