2016 Honda Odyssey Expert Review

Reviewed by Stefan Ogbac

A new special edition model that slots in between the EX and EX-L trims comes with the HondaVac built in vacuum cleaner, a 115V power outlet, a rear seat entertainment system, and SiriusXM radio.

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Honda Odyssey is a minivan with seating for up to eight passengers.

Overview

A 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 248 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque is the only engine available in the 2016 Odyssey and it's paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is class competitive at 19/28 mpg city/highway. There's 38.4 cubic feet of cargo space that can be expanded to 93.1 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 148.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.

Safety

Standard safety features include dual front, front-side, and side curtain airbags. EX-L and higher trim levels can be had with forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Blind spot warning is available only on the Touring Elite trim while the LaneWatch system can be had only on the EX grade and higher.

Trims, Packages, and What's Standard

Standard features in the base LX model include 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, Bluetooth connectivity, an eight-inch infotainment screen, split folding second and third rows, and a USB audio interface. The EX trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, Honda's LaneWatch system, a removable front venter console, second-row sunshades, 10-way power driver's seat, HondaLink infotainment system, and power sliding doors. Stepping up to the EX-L trim adds leather upholstery, lane departure warning, heated front seats, forward collision alert, a power moonroof, and a perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel. Navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system are optional in the EX-L trim.

The Touring trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, navigation, driver's seat memory, and heated side mirrors. Finally, range-topping Touring Elite models come with blind spot warning, a 650-watt premium audio system, HID headlights, and the Ultrawide rear seat entertainment system.

What We Think

In a 2014 First Test review, we appreciated the Odyssey's clever features including HondaVac, a Cool Box, and generous space for people and cargo. Additionally, the available rear-seat entertainment system, the HondaVac and Cool Box make the Odyssey an ideal family vehicle for long drives with children. The Odyssey also placed second in a comparison test that also included the Kia Sedona, Toyota Sienna, Nissan Quest and Chrysler Town & Country because it excels as at hauling everything from people to cargo. For its size the Odyssey is also great handling vehicle that rides smoothly and isn't easily upset by road imperfections. However, there's plenty of exterior noise entering the cabin due to the lack of sound insulation.

Cool Fact

The Odyssey is the first minivan to offer a built in vacuum cleaner called the HondaVac, which is available in the range-topping Touring Elite model.
