Honda Delays Next Accord, Odyssey, and Acuras For Years

Honda’s EV reset pushes key redesigns to 2030 and beyond.

Honda made a huge bet on electric vehicles. But that EV gamble appears to have turned into a $15.8 billion mistake, forcing the automaker to walk back or outright cancel plans tied to those vehicles. Now, according to a report from Automotive News, high-volume models like the Accord, Odyssey, and HR-V won’t get major updates until 2030 or later. A supplier memo obtained by AN suggests the Japanese automaker will need to squeeze every dime it can as it recovers from the financial hit.

Although Honda’s EV plans may have fizzled, a broader push toward electrification isn’t off the table. The company still plans to expand its hybrid lineup, but that timeline now appears to be slipping further into the future than originally expected. As it stands, next-generation versions of the Odyssey, Accord, and HR-V, along with the Acura MDX and Integra, aren’t expected until 2030 and beyond.

The other surprise: Honda reportedly considered axing the Odyssey minivan, at least temporarily. Even as buyers are defecting to rivals that offer AWD and/or hybrid power, such as the Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival, Honda appears to have decided to keep the minivan alive for at least three more years. The next-gen Odyssey is reportedly due in 2030 as a hybrid, with an electrified V-6 and available AWD. That same hybrid-AWD setup could also make its way into the next-generation Pilot.

According to the supplier document cited by AN, there is no next-generation gas-only Accord in the pipeline. That could mean the midsize sedan goes hybrid-only by early 2030, as production of the gasoline-only version is expected to run through March of that year.

The HR-V will also see its current life cycle stretched into the 2030s, with its redesign reportedly pushed back to early 2032. It’s joined by the Acura Integra, which has been granted three more years in its current generation, while the MDX won’t get its next full redesign until early 2031.

When reached for comment by MotorTrend, Honda replied with the following statement: “We are not going to comment on future product plans. We are very confident and excited in our future product strategy including our previously announced plans to advance our award-winning hybrid technology to more models.”
