2025 GMC Sierra EV Expert Review
Reviewed by Billy Rehbock
If a capable and luxurious truck sounds appealing, but the Hummer EV is a bit much for your sensibilities, the 2025 GMC Sierra EV could be a solid option. Initially offered exclusively at the ultra-plush Denali trim level, the Sierra EV is expected to add other variants in the first half of 2025. More expensive than the Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV takes aim at other electric pickups including the Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Tesla Cybertruck.
What’s New
- Entry-level Extended Range version
- Standard 5G connectivity
- Dark Ember Tintcoat, Deep Ocean Metallic, Summit White, Onyx Black, and Moonlight Matte paints available
What We Think
The 2025 GMC Sierra EV may share its Ultium platform and most of its features with the Chevrolet Silverado EV, but design and material differences make the two vehicles easy to distinguish. Decked out with large displays, height-adjustable air suspension, rear steering, and the ability to crab-walk, the GMC Sierra EV is as upscale as it is capable, especially in the standard Denali spec. Just like the Silverado EV, which takes a brute-force approach to its engineering, the Sierra EV has plenty of shove to launch off the line, tow, and haul. A huge battery pack ensures range anxiety won’t be an issue.
In our testing, we noted the Sierra EV’s solid real-world range and rapid Level 3 fast charging. Its cabin is notably nicer than that of its platform mate, the Silverado EV. However, the weight of its battery drags down performance, and we detected torque steer under hard acceleration.
The GMC Sierra EV’s biggest issues aren’t related to its features or its capabilities, but instead its timing and market positioning. With an abundance of other electric pickup trucks already on sale, the GMC Sierra EV is a late arrival. What’s more, the more affordable Silverado EV looks a lot more tantalizing for the majority of shoppers. Those who desire a balance of luxury and utility, however, are sure to walk away from the Sierra EV impressed.
Performance, Driving Range, and Charging
With two electric motors providing standard all-wheel drive, the 2025 GMC Sierra EV develops as much as 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque when Max Power mode is enabled. Reaching 60 mph from a standstill takes just 4.2 seconds based on our test figures, beating the 4.4-second run we achieved in the Silverado EV. The GMC Sierra EV’s range is up to 460 miles with the Max Range battery pack. Thanks to 800-volt architecture, the 204-kWh battery pack can charge at a peak rate of 350 kW, allowing the truck to add 100 miles of range in about 10 minutes. For 2025, a new Extended Range model joins the lineup with 390 miles of range.
Towing and Hauling
The 2025 GMC Sierra’s maximum towing capacity is rated at 10,500 pounds, which is 500 pounds more than the Silverado RST trim’s 10,000-pound benchmark. Expect payload to be similar to the Chevy’s 1,300-pound rating.
Safety Features
GMC Sierra EV trucks are incredibly well equipped for 2025. Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driving technology, is standard. Not only can the Sierra EV drive itself with supervision on mapped roads, the electric pickup can also tow without driver input. Other active safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, a following distance indicator, forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic braking, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assistance, and more.
GMC's MultiPro Midgate and Tailgate
There’s only one bed and cab configuration available for the 2025 GMC Sierra EV. A four-door cab with a 5-foot 11-inch bed is standard for all models. For additional utility, GMC’s MultiPro midgate extends the truck’s bed length to 9 feet 11 inches with a passthrough between the cab and bed. There’s also a MultiPro tailgate, which can be configured as steps for easier access to the bed, or to extend the bed by 1 foot 9 inches to a total of 10 feet 10 inches when the passthrough is also open. If you only use the MultiPro load stop, bed length totals 7 feet 8 inches.
Configurations and Bed Dimensions
All versions of the 2025 GMC Sierra EV are configured with a crew cab and a short bed. The box measures 70.59 inches long, 22.2 inches tall, and 49.42 inches wide. Total cargo volume for all models is 57.5 cubic feet.
Technology
At the Denali trim level, the 2025 Sierra EV is equipped with an enormous 16.8-inch infotainment touchscreen running Google built-in applications paired with an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster. GMC also outfits its pickup with a 14.0-inch head-up display. GMC's Power Station Pro features a 10.2-kW outlet that can charge another EV. 5G connectivity is standard for 2025. All models make use of a seven-speaker sound system from Bose.
Which 2025 GMC Sierra EV Trim Level Is Best?
Whether you pick the Max Range or Extended Range version of the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali, the list of standard equipment remains the same. All models roll on 24-inch wheels and adaptive air suspension. The exterior is decked out with black accents and LED lighting. Inside the cabin, there are large screens, a head-up display, 5G internet connectivity, a Bose audio system, wireless charging, eight-way power front seats with heating and ventilation, and GM’s Super Cruise driver assistance technology. Out back, the bed features a 240-volt power outlet and the clever GMC MultiPro tailgate. The Extended Range model is a better deal in our opinion, starting just under $92,000. The Max Range variant begins over the $100,000 mark.
