2013 Ford Transit Connect Expert Review

Vehicle Overview
While the 2013 Ford Transit Connect is mostly used as a work vehicle, that doesn't mean drivers should have to work hard behind the wheel. The Transit Connect is a compact commercial van that gets the job done thanks to its maneuverability, improved fuel efficiency compared to larger offerings, and capacious cargo room.
Available as a traditional van or wagon, the compact workhorse is available in four different trim levels: XL Van, XLT Van, XLT Wagon or XLT Premium Wagon. A second-row seat is the main difference between the two body styles; however, they both come with two sliding doors that can be deleted, as well as the rear door glass. The sole powertrain is a 2.0-liter I-4, which puts out 136 hp and 128 lb-ft, putting it in light-duty workhorse category. Since it's based on the Focus platform, the Transit Connect's maximum payload is 1600 pounds. Cargo space is limited at 135 cu-ft, but thanks to a low step-in height, a flat load floor, and a ceiling height of just under 5 feet, items can be packed in much more easily.
On the other hand, being car-based does have its advantages. The compact van drives more like a car, and achieves 21/24 mpg city/highway with a four-speed automatic. Standard equipment on the base model includes 15-inch wheels, an integrated blind-spot mirror, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat with an armrest and lumbar adjustment, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Stepping up to the XLT means heated mirrors, map lights, power accessories, cruise control, a 12-volt cargo area plug, a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack are included.
Available features include a compressed natural gas (CNG) Engine Prep package, rear doors that open to 255 degrees, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, the Sync voice command phone and audio player interface, and the Ford Work Solutions Crew Chief vehicle tracking system. An all-new 2014 Ford Transit Connect is in store for 2014, and may improve on the 2013 Transit Connect's two-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA.
