2026 Volkswagen Tiguan Interior Review: Quality Cabin in Need of More Buttons

We see what the thinking was here. But the minimalism is too frustrating and inconvenient in practice.

Volkswagen’s reputation was established on building cars for the people. The People’s Car, obviously. Once, it meant affordable wheels for the masses. While the German automaker’s cars are no longer the most affordable options out there, it makes up for that by offering luxury appointments and features at the mainstream level. The third-generation 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan’s cabin hits upmarket to make for a near-luxury interior. You must just make peace with nearly a complete lack of buttons.

The SEL R-Line Turbo is the highest grade of Tiguan you can buy, coming standard with bigger wheels, a bigger central screen, a Harman Kardon sound system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an acoustic windshield. Its price tag encroaches on Audi territory. Yet with its quality materials and features, it might just give its Ingolstadt cousin a run for its money.

Infotainment

Screens

Like in a Tesla, the Tiguan’s primary functions are handled via a massive central 15.0-inch touchscreen. And unlike a Tesla’s clinical and sterile aesthetic, VW’s UI is colorful and cheerful. Of course, there’s also a 10.3-inch driver display, and both are positioned low but stay easily within eyeline. They are bright, responsive, and easy to read.

The Driving Experience Dial

The central touchpoint of the Tiguan’s infotainment is the Driving Experience Dial down near the cupholders. This is a familiar piece of hardware, as it scrolls and clicks like the ones that have come before it. With this, you can control the volume, change the drive modes, and swipe across the top to adjust the ambient lighting themes.

The dial’s functions do not appear to be adjustable, so it’s a bit of a mystery to us why ambient lighting controls are the third function. We don’t think this is a high-adjustment feature for most people. However, we do appreciate the drive modes are easily selectable here instead of being hidden away in the car’s menus.

And while we’re on the topic, we’ll note the Tiguan has three ways to adjust the volume: via the dial, the slider under the screen, and the buttons on the steering wheel. Seems redundant, but perhaps this is VW’s way of making triply sure you can perform this function after its own executive said he’s not a fan of sliders.

Climate Control

So volume controls get three options, one of which is a physical button. But to adjust fan speed? That’s aaaall touchscreen, baby! You have to hit a climate icon, wait for a menu to pop up, and make your selection from there. But if you hit something else accidentally, like fan direction, the menu disappears, and you have to start all over again. It’s better to use the full climate menu rather than the quick-touch menu because the latter is so fleeting.

Besides that, there are sliders for temperature adjustments, and these work all right.

Still, we can’t get over the fact that all of this distraction and frustration could have been avoided if designers hadn’t taken all the buttons and dials out in the first place. This, by far, was the weakest part of the cabin experience.

Tech

Phone Mirroring

Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered here, and they connect seamlessly both at initial setup and upon vehicle startup thereafter.

Safety Suite

Volkswagen’s adaptive cruise control and safety suite, IQ Drive, works to industry standard: keeping the car centered in its lane, safely following traffic when active, and alerting the driver of obstacles when necessary. We didn’t find it particularly intrusive and were happy to live with it during the week of the loan.

Cabin Materials

Real Wood and Leather

The Tiguan scores big wins with its cabin materials. As we’ve observed in the past, it’s easy to slap some plastic imitation stuff onto a surface and call it a day, especially in the mainstream segment. Here, though? Volkswagen elected to use real wood as part of its horizontally oriented dashboard surround, and the effect is a lighthearted, beachy vibe.

The two-tone saddle-colored leather wears attractive, hexagonal stitching. The leather itself is soft but also feels durable.

Ergonomics

The cabin’s ergonomics are all very nice. Aside from the inelegant tacked-on look of the giant central screen, the dashboard layout is clean and tidy. The steering wheel feels good in the hand and is comfortably sized. We’re thrilled to say it encompasses plenty of physical buttons for the cruise control, heated steering wheel, and radio.

Two cupholders and a little slot for a wallet mark out the central cubby situation, along with an elbow cubby with an integrated phone clip. True, it keeps the phone secured and out of the way, but we also found ourselves forgetting the phone was there a couple of times because it’s so out of sight.

High-Gloss Surfaces

We recognize cars that are currently on offer were designed at least five years prior, so we’ll forgive the use of piano black trim here. But we’ll still call it out as the scuffy and high-maintenance material it is. Hopefully the next time the Tiguan is updated, it’ll mark the end of piano black altogether.

Beyond that, there are stripes of other high-gloss plastics across the Tiguan’s doors and passenger dash. Designers dressed these up with pixels of light, and they look good on the doors. But in front of the passenger, it sort of looks like a blank screen that’s supposed to show something but doesn’t.

Too Many Sliders

You know our feelings on the climate and volume sliders. They’re silly. We’re also adding the panoramic sunroof slider controls to that list. Figuring out the sunshade and roof controls was totally unintuitive and required an upward glance to confirm we were sliding the right thing. And activating the in-cabin lights took us an additional bit of prodding to figure out. Turns out, you have to touch the actual cover on the light to activate that specific one.

Seating

Front Seats

In addition to their great upholstery, the front seats remain comfortable even after many hours of driving. There’s good lower back and lumbar support and decent under-thigh cushioning. The test car came with both heated and cooled seats, though the cooling felt pretty weak and inadequate, even in its most powerful setting.

Pleasantly, the Tiguan also offers front massage functionality as standard on this grade. Don’t expect anything crazy, as the pressure stays pretty light. But it’s a nice thing to have after a long day, and it’s certainly not found in other cars in this segment.

The Tiguan has excellent front door pockets and can fit a variety of water bottles.

Back Seats

In the past, other VW SUVs we’ve experienced had thin seat foam, rendering these seats rather benchlike. In the current Tiguan, the rear seats are comfortable—definitely not punishing for those passengers. They’re likewise treated to large door pockets, as well as a climate vent, two USB ports, and heated outboard seats.

There are soft-touch materials lining the armrests here, as well, meaning the Tiguan’s niceties don’t stop with front passengers.

Trunk

The Tiguan’s trunk is spacious and in line with what’s expected in this segment. It offers 33.8 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats upright, essentially tying it with the Mazda CX-5’s 33.7 cubic feet and lagging behind the Honda CR-V's 39.3 cubic feet in a recent comparison review.

In Conclusion

The Tiguan has been modernized, and in top-grade SEL R-Line Turbo form, it has an interior that rivals from Honda, Toyota, and Mazda can’t offer. It has massage seats! But at the test car’s $45,015 MSRP, it’s also priced a few thousand more than those offerings, and it doesn’t yet offer a hybrid powertrain. The trade-off is great cabin materials and functionality, comfortable seats, and usable cargo space.

Volkswagen overcorrected a bit with the interior minimalism, removing too many buttons to be convenient or necessary. But all hope is not lost. The automaker has seen the error in its ways and has stated on the record it will be putting buttons back for upcoming models. We can’t wait, because this is the only thing standing in the way of the already good Tiguan being great.

I got into cars the way most people do: my dad. Since I was little, it was always something we’d talk about and I think he was stoked to have his kid share his interest. He’d buy me the books, magazines, calendars, and diecast models—everything he could do to encourage a young enthusiast. Eventually, I went to school and got to the point where people start asking you what you want to do with your life. Seeing as cars are what I love and writing is what I enjoy doing, combining the two was the logical next step. This dream job is the only one I’ve ever wanted. Since then, I’ve worked at Road & Track, Jalopnik, Business Insider, The Drive, and now MotorTrend, and made appearances on Jay Leno’s Garage, Good Morning America, The Smoking Tire Podcast, Fusion’s Car vs. America, the Ask a Clean Person podcast, and MotorTrend’s Shift Talkers. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching the Fast & Furious movies on repeat. Tokyo Drift is the best one.
