William began his search at age 15 for a del Sol that would inevitably be his project car for the next decade. He perused a local junkyard that his father often frequented and found a white del Sol shell for just $100. By the time he got his driver's license, he had already put together a pretty decent car with an LS motor, which he later boosted. Knowledge back then was as limited as quality parts availability. Even worse were limited tuning options, so he blew a couple of motors through trial and error. After a run down the 1320 at a Honda Day event in New Jersey resulted in a freshly built motor blowing sky high, William and his father decided it was time to go in a different direction. With some careful thought, they made the choice to attempt a K swap. Reliable power and better technology took precedence over the "cool" factor of being turbocharged and out came the blown B series. What started out as a simple K swap quickly escalated into a much bigger project. William's "might as well" mentality got the best of him, so he took the opportunity to do a complete wire and brake tuck. He rocked his K24 for a couple of years, but the worn-down exterior was becoming a major issue. Almost nonchalantly, he and a friend pulled the motor to shave the engine bay before the car was resprayed.

To say that William was a "Mugen-whore" is a blatant understatement. He's collected nearly every product Mugen has ever produced for this chassis so that he could create his own version of the Japanese Mugen CRX del Sol Pro.3. It took him, with expert help from Matt from ICB Motorsport, a number of years to gather all the parts. Reasoning that if he was going to get one Mugen piece, he "might as well" collect everything else Mugen-related for the car. From the aero to the interior accessories, all the way down to the wheels and brakes, it was all or nothing for William.

And before you assume it's just a pretty face, he didn't just drop his stock K series back in. Instead, he and his father built an entirely new setup, consisting of a built, 12.5:1 compression K24 block and K20Z3 head with Brian Crower Stage 2 cams. To bring his engine bay together, the final touch is a custom mil-spec harness from master wiring guru, Rywire.

While it may seem like Wang's build was completely effortless, that definitely isn't the case. It's been a 10-year journey leading up to this as the final product, and the amount of work involved in getting it to this stage is immeasurable-he just made it look easy. That's due in part to not harboring unattainable expectations, but also because of his execution and willingness to work-a direct result of his knowledge-filled upbringing. William Wang's del Sol is a perfect representation of himself; both are a little unconventional and unassuming, but if you take the time to get a closer look, you'll soon realize that both were brought up with quality and a rich work ethic.

Real Deal Mugen

The Mugen CRX del Sol kit is definitely the most popular aero choice among del Sol owners, and youre likely to stumble upon a few of them every time you attend an event. It is indeed an eye-pleasing kit, but it should be noted that many of the Mugen kits youre seeing on EG2s, at least in the U.S., are not authentic Mugen components. In reality, the legitimate, real deal Mugen kit for the del Sol is very hard to come by and quite the rarity within the Honda community. If you talk to die-hard del Sol aficionados, they will tell you there are but a handful of genuine, complete Mugen del Sol kits in existence Stateside.
