This Is the 2027 BMW 7 Series: Even More Screens, New Tech, and the Same Presence

BMW’s flagship sedan receives a big technology refresh the company hopes keeps it at the front of the pack.

Not yet ready for a full-on replacement, the 2027 BMW 7 Series receives a significant refresh that gives it an updated face and new technologies to keep everything cutting edge. But it should still provide the ultimate first-class driving and riding-in experience we’ve come to expect.

As with before, BMW’s new 7 Series offers a number of powertrains and packages so you can mix and match to build the executive full-size sedan of your dreams. Chauffeur sold separately.

Streamlined Exterior

The existing seventh-generation 7 Series presented BMW fans with the biggest 7 grille to date because of all the front-end real estate it needed to cover. That fact remains largely the same, but you’ll notice the lower slash of lights has been removed, leaving that space emptier and cleaner overall. You can option crystal headlights for extra sparkle.

If you’re one for dramatics, the car puts on a welcome and goodbye light exhibition, and you can choose your favorite animation from Relaxed, Balanced, and Excited.

BMW redesigned the rear lights, as well. They now feature two thin blades that extend much farther toward the center of the trunk rather than the thicker, vaguely hockey stick-looking light signature of the pre-refresh model.

Our favorite angle of the new 7 is in profile, especially when optioned with the new Dual-Finish paint and hand-drawn coachline that runs from the front, over the shoulder, and to the car’s tail. Metallic on top and matte on the bottom, it emphasizes the 7 Series presence and requires a whopping 75-plus hours in the paint shop to complete. Viewed this way, the big BMW more than looks the part of an executive cruiser.

Neue Klasse Interior

Inside, lavish and opulent cabin materials and varied details and textures fit for royalty remain. The center console and instrument panel come trimmed in open-pore wood as standard, but you can upgrade to Alcantara, carbon fiber, or different wood trims in high-gloss if you desire.

Technologically, the Neue Klasse pack of goods awaits drivers and passengers. In addition to the BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X OS, the pillar-to-pillar Panoramic Vision removes the need for a traditionally placed driver cluster, so that funky and new steering wheel we saw in the i3 appears. BMW will have five steering wheels to choose from, each in up to three colors.

That all accompanies the new 17.9-inch “free-cut” center touchscreen. We were able to mess around with this screen for a bit during a product preview and can report it has excellent readability and great graphics—under carefully controlled studio lighting, anyway. Just like in the new Lincoln models, you can drag some of the widgets from the lower central screen up to the pillar screen and rearrange them to your liking.

But the screens don’t end here: Now standard across all 7 Series models and trims (and making its official BMW debut) is an additional passenger screen. At 14.6 inches, it encompasses the same technologies as the center screen. This one, however, is specifically to provide passenger entertainment, because given the rear Theater Screen, the front passenger might feel neglected. BMW said the passenger screen contains a display shield to ensure the driver can’t see it and won’t get distracted.

A new feature for the rear Theater Screen option: It now has a built-in passenger-facing camera that is compatible with the Zoom app, so you can take calls and meetings right from your 7 Series’ back seat.

A bit of not-so-awesome news: The HVAC vents are now fully electric, meaning you must use the central display to control them.

Myriad Powertrain Options

The 2027 BMW 7 Series will launch with two all-electric all-wheel-drive i7 models, the i7 50 xDrive and the i7 60 xDrive. As the base electric 7 Series, the i7 50 xDrive will produce 449 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. It’ll achieve a top speed of 130 mph and a 0–60-mph time of 5.3 seconds. Starting MSRP will be $107,750. The i7 60 xDrive will produce 536 hp and 549 lb-ft, hit 60 in 4.6 seconds, and have a top speed of an electronically limited 149 mph. Prices start at $126,250.

BMW said both will benefit from Neue Klasse next-gen battery technology that improves efficiency and energy density. Finally, a NACS charging port will come as standard. BMW claims charging from 10 to 80 percent happens in 28 minutes under ideal conditions.

On the combustion-engine side, the all-wheel-drive 740 xDrive is updated to now produce 394 hp while its 398 lb-ft of torque stays the same. Its 0–60-mph sprint happens in less than 5 seconds, and it has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Prices start at $104,350. The rear-wheel-drive 740 gets the same powertrain and same outputs, but prices start at a lower $101,350.

Finally, another option is coming in the 750e xDrive PHEV, which will arrive next year. Here, the straight-six engine will connect to an electric motor to produce a combined output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. The run to 60 happens in 4.6 seconds, BMW said, and there’s an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. That number drops to 87 mph if you’re driving in all-electric mode. BMW has not yet announced a price for the PHEV version.

Conspicuously missing from Wednesday’s first look is the i7 M70, but we’re told a V-8-powered M Performance model is coming later. We expect to hear more soon.

Owing to the fact BMW got a lot right with the pre-refresh 7 Series, we expect the 2027 models to continue to be the opulent luxo-barges they’ve established themselves as previously. Smooth, quiet, and quick, they’re sure to impress anyone who drives or rides in one, regardless of propulsion method. Production and worldwide deliveries are slated to begin this July.

I got into cars the way most people do: my dad. Since I was little, it was always something we’d talk about and I think he was stoked to have his kid share his interest. He’d buy me the books, magazines, calendars, and diecast models—everything he could do to encourage a young enthusiast. Eventually, I went to school and got to the point where people start asking you what you want to do with your life. Seeing as cars are what I love and writing is what I enjoy doing, combining the two was the logical next step. This dream job is the only one I’ve ever wanted. Since then, I’ve worked at Road & Track, Jalopnik, Business Insider, The Drive, and now MotorTrend, and made appearances on Jay Leno’s Garage, Good Morning America, The Smoking Tire Podcast, Fusion’s Car vs. America, the Ask a Clean Person podcast, and MotorTrend’s Shift Talkers. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and watching the Fast & Furious movies on repeat. Tokyo Drift is the best one.
