Electric vehicle segments are filling up fast as automakers continue to bring new models to market with the hopes of offering something unique to entice EV-curious buyers. The 2026 Volvo EX30 Single Motor Plus is one such vehicle. Positioned as an electric compact luxury SUV but smaller than other models in the segment, the EX30 presents as more of a large hatchback in the sheetmetal.
Most non-luxury EVs this size are mainstream models short on style and performance. The EX30 has plenty of both and attempts to blend those traits with all-around versatility from a distinctive, Scandinavian point of view. Did Volvo succeed in creating a small all-electric SUV that’s both appealing and relatively affordable? We put the EX30 through our testing regimen to find out.
Swedish Sweetheart
The Volvo EX30’s forward motion is defined by a general sense of pluckiness. Acceleration is quick and feels exciting when you break away from a stoplight well ahead of unsuspecting traffic. Electric motors are smooth by definition, but the EX30’s drive unit powering the rear wheels feels uncommonly crisp and linear when you whack the accelerator. The small SUV dashed from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds in our testing, which places it squarely in hot hatch territory; a current-generation Volkswagen GTI needs 5.8 seconds to get the job done.
With a healthy output of 268 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, Volvo’s compact SUV continues to gather speed well beyond the realm of legality. At the track, the EX30 sprinted through the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at 102.4 mph. Again, that’s quicker than a GTI, which took 14.3 seconds to complete the run with a 98.9-mph trap speed. On the road, the Volvo’s rapidity translates to confident passing and merging maneuvers.
Thankfully, the EX30 has the handling chops to back up its brisk acceleration. Steering is light and precise, allowing for low-effort driving while you zip around city streets and accurate tire placement on a curvy road. The suspension is set up to be comfortable, but the EX30’s body is well controlled and remains composed when you’re hustling the little SUV through a sweeping freeway ramp.
When it comes time to haul it down to a stop, the Volvo EX30 has you covered. Its brake pedal feels light, just like its steering, but the pedal travel is natural, with progressive bite. Some EVs have poor stopping distances due to their weight and low-rolling-resistance tires, but the EX30 Single Motor Plus doesn’t seem to suffer from that issue. Tipping our scales at just 3,921 pounds, it needs 119 feet to come to a standstill from 60 mph. During hard braking events, the EX30’s body remains tidy and controlled. A Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD needs 125 feet to slow from 60 to 0 mph, while the sportier Volkswagen GTI needs just 110 feet. As a whole, the Volvo’s stopping distance is solid for its size and class.
While not expressly performance-oriented, the 2026 Volvo EX30 Single Motor Plus manages to put together a decent lap time of 26.3 seconds around our figure-eight test circuit. That trails the GTI by 0.7 second, due in part to its non-defeatable electronic stability control, which cuts power around the corners until the steering wheel is pretty much straight. Poking at the accelerator provokes the EX30 to rotate, but Volvo’s safety-focused tuning puts a damper on at-the-limit performance.
That’s not a dealbreaker, however, because the EX30 isn’t positioned as a hot hatch; it just happens to do a great impersonation of one when needed. Otherwise, Volvo’s smallest EV is comfortable, compliant, and easy to operate. Its well-mannered ride and handling alleviate the strain of commuting in rush-hour traffic. When you need to squeeze into a curbside parking spot, its compact dimensions make for easy maneuvering. Every aspect of the EX30’s on-road behavior is cheerful and agreeable, making it an absolute joy to wheel around as a daily driver.
