Driven Again! The 2025 Lucid Gravity Is as Good as EV SUVs Get

When you think of family-friendly luxury SUVs, words like spacious, practical, and safe usually come to mind. Performance? That’s often an afterthought. But not for Lucid; this isn’t a company that’s in the business of building traditional vehicles. If the Air executive sedan set the tone, the 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV raised the bar. For the Gravity, Lucid pushed its engineering limits to deliver a vehicle featuring a genuinely engaging driving experience and cutting-edge tech, while still checking all the right boxes for family life. 

We got our first taste of a Gravity prototype late last year, but this time we made our way to California’s central coast wine country to get behind the wheel of a production-ready Gravity, where we put it through its paces on some seriously twisty tarmac

Exceptional Handling

On paper, the 2025 Lucid Gravity’s stats read more like a supercar than a three-row SUV: Dual electric motors crank out a staggering 828 hp and 909 lb-ft of torque, launching the three tons of fun from 0 to 60 mph in a ridiculous 3.4 seconds. But it’s not just about brute force. As an EV, the Gravity delivers serious efficiency credentials, as well—up to 450 miles of range, and when it’s hooked up to a 400-kilowatt fast charger, you can reportedly juice it up with 200 miles in less than 12 minutes. Lucid engineers are quick to note that it even charges faster than a Tesla at a Tesla Supercharger. Even better, a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port comes built in, giving it access to the Supercharger network (every Gravity will also come with an adapter that allows a switch from NACS to CCS).

Specs are one thing—but it’s how the Gravity feels that truly sets it apart from the three-row luxe pack. Like any EV, torque is instantaneous, but Lucid’s tuning ensures the power delivery is smooth, linear, and incredibly consistent. Whether you’re launching from a stop sign or already cruising at highway speeds, there’s always more muscle on tap. Stab the throttle, and the Gravity surges forward with authority. Passing maneuvers are handled with ease, and there’s no drop-off in urgency. Go full throttle from a standstill, and the Gravity squats hard, digging in like a performance SUV with serious intent. 

That planted, confident feel on the road is no accident—it’s the result of serious engineering strides under the skin. While the Gravity shares some componentry with Lucid’s Air sedan, the automaker considers this a new chassis altogether. Its electric motors, already a marvel in the Air for their compact size and immense power, have been made even more efficient for SUV duty. True to Lucid form, the team didn’t just tweak—they rethought. Rear-seat space and dynamic handling were both top priorities, and the solution was clever: dual independent rear-steer actuators. This setup frees up room to fit the third row between the rear wheelwells while keeping its driving goals, creating an adult-friendly space that won’t punish anyone south of 6 feet tall.  

Our drive route took us through the scenic stretch between Los Olivos and Santa Maria, deep in the central coast wine country. While the region is known for its picturesque vineyards, it's the roads—carved with tight switchbacks and flowing sweepers—that really stole the show. And it’s on these roads where the Gravity’s dynamic prowess came into sharp focus. For a three-row SUV, the body control is borderline exceptional—composed, planted, and shockingly unflustered no matter how hard we pushed. Corner after corner, we had to remind ourselves: This is a family hauler, not a sport sedan. Credit also goes to the steering, which is crisp, well weighted, and gives the Gravity the kind of precision and confidence usually reserved for something far lower and lighter. 

With minimal body roll and sharp handling, the Gravity’s ride feels far more Porsche than people mover. The massive 123-kWh battery certainly helps keep the center of gravity low, but it’s the chassis tuning that does the heavy lifting here. Lucid’s engineers have nailed the brief—delivering an overall ride and handling balance that feels taut and composed without sacrificing comfort or usability.

Luxury Inside and Out

Step inside, and the cabin of the Gravity will feel familiar to anyone who's spent time in a Lucid Air—slick, modern, and tech-heavy in all the right ways. Its sweeping 34-inch curved display immediately commands attention with its upscale design and razor-sharp resolution, while the additional 11-inch screen on the center console reinforces the Gravity’s tech-forward personality. The display quality is top tier, though we did notice a slight lag on the top screen during use, and the navigation graphics didn’t quite match the crispness of the rest of the interface. Apple CarPlay won’t be available at launch, but Lucid promises it’s coming soon via an over-the-air update. 

Anyone stepping into the Gravity’s cabin is sure to get a sense of prestige from its packaging. Our Grand Touring model, the flagship trim available at launch, was loaded with luxury. The massaging seats for both front passengers were nothing short of exceptional, offering a deeper, more therapeutic experience than most rivals. The materials are top-tier—whether it’s supple synthetic leather or the real thing, everything feels first class. Even the premium fabric made from recycled plastic bottles adds a touch of eco-conscious luxury, enhancing the cabin’s overall aesthetic without compromising on style or feel. 

The first-class treatment doesn’t stop at the front seats, though. The second row offers plenty of room to stretch out, with folding tables on the backrests of the front seats that rival what you’d find on an airplane—large enough to comfortably hold a laptop. Whether you're shuttling the kids to school or being chauffeured around town, the Gravity ensures the second-row passengers enjoy the same level of luxury. A 7.0-inch rear display between the front seats adds to the convenience, giving passengers control over everything from climate settings to media playback. 

Getting into the third row is surprisingly easy. A button press on the side of the second-row seat moves it forward automatically, creating a wide enough gap to slip through without struggle. For those with good mobility, it’s a breeze, and once you're back there, the third row is surprisingly spacious and potentially comfortable enough for longer road trips. The second row is designed to slide back into position automatically after a slight pull. We did notice a hiccup; only one side returned to its original spot, a glitch you don’t want to see in a nearly $100,000 SUV.

Regardless of which row you’re in, the Gravity is designed to maximize every inch of its space, and that extends to the cargo capacity. Like a minivan, the trunk is deep enough to fold the third row flat, creating a spacious, usable floor perfect for groceries, luggage, or whatever you need to haul. The second row also folds flat, opening an expansive cargo area ideal for moving boxes or large items. When compared to the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, the Gravity offers around 40 percent more space for those boxes (120 cubic feet in the five-seat version, and 114.3 cubic feet on the seven-seater). And with a decently sized frunk (front trunk) thrown into the mix, there’s even more room to stash your gear. 

Lucid also designed the Gravity with versatility in mind, positioning it as a true recreational vehicle. Thanks to its air suspension, the Gravity can raise itself by up to 4 inches, offering a total ground clearance of 9.3 inches—enough to navigate dirt roads without worrying about rocks or scraping the undercarriage. For weekend adventures or tailgates (or should we say "frontgates"?), it has you covered with three 120V outlets—one in the frunk, one in the second row, and another in the rear cargo area. And for those who need to haul occasionally, the Gravity can also tow up to 6,000 pounds, with Tow mode ensuring the vehicle’s performance is dialed in to handle the load. 

How Much?

The 2025 Lucid Gravity starts at $81,400 for the Touring model, while the Grand Touring kicks off at $96,550. It’s not a bargain, but when you consider the cutting-edge technology, impressive range, and sports-car-level performance, it’s hard to beat—especially compared to other three-row electric SUVs (the Cadillac Escalade IQ edges out the Gravity by 10 miles of range, but it also packs a much larger battery).   

Lucid is clearly targeting customers considering the EQE SUV, Rivian R1S, Escalade IQ, BMW X7, or Audi Q7. The Gravity more than holds its own in this competitive space, though its design—closer to a minivan than a traditional boxy SUV—may be a turnoff for some buyers. Still, with its blend of tech and performance, it’s a serious contender. Only time will tell if it wins over the monied masses.
