Road Test: 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara JLX+

Although we nicknamed it the "Grand Viagra," this little Suzuki still receives regular staff criticism for its less than stimulating acceleration. The real benefits of the small-displacement V-6 can be seen off-road, where its low-rpm torque combine with the four-wheel-drive system to give this sport/cute impressive capabilities. Coupled with good throttle modulation, tight turning radius, and aggressive-for-class tires, the Grand Vitara does surprisingly well in mud and on trails. The ladder-frame chassis proves a solid foundation for mounting the MacPherson strut front/five-link live axle with coils rear suspension, striking a good balance between off-roading agility and on-road handling manners. However, the ride doesn't match the sophistication of our dearly departed, independently suspended Honda CR-V. Interior design has elicited "two thumbs up" logbook comments, with drivers finding the dash well laid out and the seats reasonably comfortable. Center armrests would be appreciated (their fault), as would a CD player (our fault).
