Video Find: Jeff Zwart’s Record Pikes Peak Run in the Porsche 911 GT2 RS

Writer

Seven-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Jeff Zwart wanted to race a more powerful car up the mountain this year, so he swapped-out last year's Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car with a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Not only did break records in the GT2 RS, but he was also the only competitor to drive 1132 miles from L.A. to the high-altitude hill climb.

The 620-hp GT2 RS was fitted with upgraded safety equipment, including a fire suppression system, roll cage, and a race seat with harness. But this Porsche was far from a full-race stripper - its interior still had a navigation-equipped audio system and air conditioning to keep Zwart comfortable during his journey from Santa Ana south of L.A. to the base of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs.

Porsche claims the GT2 RS averaged 22.6 miles-per-gallon - not bad for a 620-hp, race-equipped sports car traveling from sea level to the 9390-foot starting line. After a quick stop at a local Porsche dealer for final preparation, Zwart and the 911 GT2 RS were ready for Sunday's 4720-foot hill climb. Zwart shattered last year's record by a full 24 seconds, completing the grueling 12.5 mile, 156 turn course in 11 minutes 7.869 seconds. He also set the record for the fastest street-legal car ever to race up the Peak.
