So Long, Cybertruck: Tesla Announces It Will Wind Down Production of Slow-Selling Pickup

The stainless-steel pickup was quick, capable, and impossible to ignore—but not enough buyers signed on.

There have been few vehicles in automotive history as controversial as the Tesla Cybertruck and now it appears it will be history, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on X that the automaker will wind down production of the vehicle at the Gigafactory Texas facility that assembles it. Production of the Cybertruck will end in mid-2027.

Musk cited a need to make room for production of the new Cybercab as the reason behind the move, but poor sales almost certainly played a role in the decision, with roughly 70,000 units sold since it launched in late 2023. That’s a far cry from Tesla’s estimates that it would sell more than 100,000 copies a year.

Price and positioning also likely played a role as well, with Cybertruck models priced well over $80,000. At present, the Premium AWD model on the Tesla site starts at $92,490. The truck was originally promised to start at $39,900 but no model ever went on sale below $59,000.

Arriving in 2024 after a long gestation period, the Cybertruck’s awkwardly angular, in-your-face, stainless-steel-clad exterior proved controversial, to put it mildly. And it arrived just as Tesla CEO Elon Musk had become a hugely polarizing figure in American politics, further amplifying the angst surrounding it.

But other than its compromised visibility due to said styling, the Cybertruck is pretty good at doing truck things, and its highly impressive drive-by-wire steering setup was a highlight. It’s also massively powerful in its highest spec, triple-motor Cyberbeast powertrain arrangement. In our testing, that model tied the Rivian R1T among electrick pickups with a supercar-like 0–60-mph time of 2.5 seconds.

Although it’s likely to go down as a modern-day Edsel as opposed to the pioneering EV truck that in many ways it is, one thing’s for sure: You’re never, ever going to mistake it for anything else.
