Supercharged Mazda MX-5 Miata Yusho Prototype Has 241 HP

Mazda Miata fans get ready - the Japanese automaker showed off the MX-5 Miata Yusho prototype at the Leipzig auto show last week. What makes the Yusho so special is a supercharger that ups the roadster's power numbers by an extra 74 hp and 62 lb-ft of torque.

Thanks to the supercharger, the 2.0-liter I-4 has had its output pumped up to 241 hp and 202 lb-ft from the standard 167 hp and 140 lb-ft. Top speed is now up to 150 mph. Despite the German introduction, the forced induction comes thanks to American tuner Flyin' Miata.

Other powertrain upgrades to the Miata Yusho include a retuned ECU, new fuel injectors, Cosworth pistons and connecting rods, and a specially designed muffler that ends in center-mounted double tailpipes. Thanks to the new exhaust system, the exhaust sound can be adjusted for more or less noise. The Yusho maintains the standard six-speed manual transmission, but swaps in a sports clutch and a shorter 4.1 final drive ratio. Bilstein shocks, larger stabilizer bars, Eibach lowering springs, and semi-slick Toyo tires on 17-inch anthracite gray alloy wheels round out the updates to the sportier the sports car.

A matte-white wrap and spoiler along with a contrasting carbon-fiber rear diffuser and the dark wheels give the MX-5 Miata Yusho an aggressive appearance. Inside, the cabin is decked out in Alcantara, suede, and leather along with unique Recaro sport seats.

Since it is just a concept, Mazda has yet say whether or not the Yusho will make it into production. However, Flyin' Miata helped Mazda Germany build the one-off car, and is now reporting that the automaker is considering a 100-car run of the hot droptop. Fingers crossed…
