Report: Production Volkswagen Golf R 400 Being Discussed

Writer

If you are in possession of a dual-clutch automatic gearbox that can handle a whole lot of torque, please get in touch with Volkswagen immediately. A report fromAutocarindicates that Volkswagen wants to build the crazy Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept, but it first requires a dual-clutch automatic transmission that can handle the hatch's significant torque gains beyond that of the standard Golf R.

Making its debut at the 2014 Beijing auto show, the Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept is a highly modified version of the current Golf R. While the standard Volkswagen Golf R already has all-wheel drive, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and a dual-clutch automatic transmission, its 290 hp is simply dwarfed by the R 400's peak output of 395 hp. Prominent visual modifications of the Golf R 400 concept include a comprehensive aero package, upgraded wheels, unique interior stitching, and race-spec shell seats.

Volkswagen says the hot-hatch concept can surge from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Autocarreports that the six-speed DSG in the Golf R is already maxed out with the hot hatch's 280 lb-ft of torque, meaning it cannot support the increased loads that the Golf R 400 would produce. It's possible that a production Golf R 400 could benefit from the recently announced 10-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is rated for up to 369 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen will use the 10-speed in other larger, non-sporty cars in Europe.

Even if the Golf R 400 heads to production, it is uncertain whether it would make its way to U.S. shores. The standard 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is estimated to cost about $34,000 when it comes stateside, and an even more expensive, niche-market Golf would be a tough sell, no matter how much we'd love to have it here.
