Ram Is About to Get Its Own SUV With ICE and Hybrid Options in 2028
A report says Ram will finally get its own SUV set to arrive beside the revived Dakota midsize pickup truck, with internal combustion or hybrid power.Ever since Stellantis (back when it was still “FCA”) split off its trucks from Dodge, Ram has never had its own SUV. A surprising fact considering Ram has always been pitched as the rugged brand for the worker that also offered rebranded Fiat vans, while Dodge kept the Durango. Now, it seems that along with the Dakota's return, Ram will finally get an SUV in 2028. There’s further good news if you’re not a fan of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs or just plain EVs, take your pick): this new SUV will get an internal combustion engine (ICE) as well as the option of a range-extending electric vehicle (REEV) powerplant.

The surprise announcement comes courtesy of Automotive News via a report about Stellantis’ recent CEO, Antonio Filosa, meeting with Wall Street analysts. During this October 30 briefing, Filosa stated Ram will gain a “much more comprehensive product range” with a Michigan-made SUV that will debut beside the Dakota midsize pickup (which will be assembled in Ohio) in 2028. If true, this would be Ram’s first ever SUV in nearly two decades since it separated from Dodge.
This unnamed SUV is to be built at the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Warren, Michigan. The exact powertrains that will be under its hood remain unknown, but the hybrid option sounds like it may use the same REEV powertrain as the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. In this case, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is simply a generator for the battery pack, and the electric motors are used for all its propulsion. This would give the Ram SUV 500 miles of range and up to 647 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque while being nearly whisper quite in “EV mode.”
For the straight ICE powertrain, this SUV might be able use the new, radical Hurricane 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and its 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. But it’s probably more likely we’ll see the Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo I-6 under the hood for its 420 hp and 469 lb-ft in "Standard Output" tune, or the 540-hp and 521-lb-ft "High Output" calibration. Or this might be another home for the revived Hemi V-8 and its e-torque mild-hybrid system that was just revived for the Ram 1500.
