The first EREV we learned about is the Ram 1500 REV (initially called the Ramcharger), which is a version of the full-size Ram pickup truck with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine that acts as a generator for the electric powertrain. Range is an estimated 169 miles EV-only and about 690 miles with a full battery charge and a topped-up gas tank, while also providing the towing and payload truck owners need. Output sits at 647 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque.

Then, the automaker has confirmed it will put the same EREV hybrid powertrain into its Jeep Grand Wagoneer large three-row SUV. It will be capable of about 150 miles of EV-only range and about 500 miles of total range. It has a smaller fuel tank than the Ram pickup.

Both are scheduled to go into production this year, with early indications the Jeep could be first to market. We asked Tim Kuniskis, head of American brands and North America marketing and retail strategy for Stellantis, which one will be available first.

It will depend on how the vehicle launches go at the plant level, Kuniskis tells MotorTrend in an interview at the Detroit auto show. The Ram will come out of the Sterling Heights, Michigan, plant; the Jeeps are built in nearby Warren.

Not Doing That Again

Stellantis learned a hard lesson in 2024 during the launch of the current-generation Ram full-size pickup which introduced a new look, powertrain, electrical system, advanced driver assistance system, and infotainment system. The complexity made for a painful launch, as the company could not get enough models and trims to customers, which suppressed sales and profitability.

“Doing all five of those at once was a lesson learned. Bad idea. Don’t ever do it again,” Kuniskis said. “What we are doing now is we are looking at the new models we are bringing in, we’re looking at the Express, the Warlock, the [2027] TRX, some things that we haven’t revealed yet, trying to slot them in.”

Bringing in the bonkers 777-hp performance TRX is actually easier than introducing the more complicated extended-range hybrid powertrain, Kuniskis says. To not repeat the mistakes of 2024, the plan is to introduce the EREVs as part of a carefully planned cadence, with a buffer between them and other introductions, so nothing overlaps and diverts attention.
