Qualcomm to Make BMW Neue Klasse “Superbrain” Available to Others
Any automaker will soon be able to utilize groundbreaking Snapdragon Ride Pilot's AI-enabled automated driving features. We’re pretty jazzed about the advancements in the functionality and user-friendliness innovations BMW is introducing with its Neue Klasse line of products. It launches this week with the 2027 BMW iX3 electric SUV, but we’re just learning that the “superbrains” powering its “Heart of Joy” will become available to other automakers and suppliers. That’s because they were co-developed by BMW and semiconductor supplier Qualcomm, but the development deal is not exclusive so we can expect to see this technology spread to other automakers.

System: on Chip and In Cloud
In an introductory briefing, Qualcomm marketing VP Ignacio Contreras explained that “Snapdragon Ride Pilot is not an SoC [system on chip], it's not software, it's not a cloud-server service. It's all of it. It's a full system solution that's designed for automated driving, and it's, of course, very comprehensive.” It needs all of the above because it employs a hybrid AI system that runs both onboard the vehicle and in the cloud to enhance reliability and flexibility for automakers.
New “Feature Extraction” Capability
The system rolling out on the 2027 BMW iX3 utilizes the 360-degree “fisheye” cameras for object detection, teasing data out of the feed that usually just identifies lane markings, reads traffic signs, etc. This is said to reduce latency, enhancing performance in complex scenarios.
