Jaguar Land Rover Invests in R&D for Green Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover will expand the size of its Whitley engineering and design center in the U.K. to support development of "ultra-low emission vehicles," the automaker announced today.

According to the automaker, the Whitley facility will more than double in size when it adds 62 acres of extra land. That equates to over 30 football fields created under the multi-million-pound investment in cleaner cars.

As stricter fuel economy standards take hold around the world, Jaguar will inevitably start making electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles down the line. But so far the British marque has taken other approaches to reducing fuel consumption with the introduction of aluminum and lightweight technologies. Also, the company's next-gen Ingenium engine lineup features next-gen four-cylinder gas and diesel engines that will power future models.

In the near future, Jaguar Land Rover will launch the compact Jaguar XE sedan,refreshed Range Rover Evoque, and Range Rover Sport with a diesel engine for North America. Over the next five years, however, the automaker plans an even bigger overhaul, promising 50 major upgrades throughout its lineup. These changes will help keep sales on the current trajectory; deliveries have more than doubled over the last five years.
