GT4 track car is also on the way

The Mercedes-AMG GT will continue to pester the Porsche 911 thanks to new variants in the pipeline, including a convertible, Black Series, and a possible track-focused GT4 model.

Auto Expressrecently chatted with AMG boss Tobias Moers, who was eager to share news about the new GT models expected to follow the AMG GT R, the sports car's third model unveiled last week.

"The convertible has moved well beyond the drawing board," Moers toldAuto Express. "It will be the next AMG GT model to arrive."

Moers said the Mercedes-AMG GT convertible would feature a soft top to keep weight and complexity to a minimum. The new model could be ready as early as next year, though he hinted the drop top's debut may happen by the end of this year, perhaps at the 2016 Paris Auto Show this October or the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Moers also suggested the GT convertible would not cannibalize the Mercedes SL, stating the former is a sports car, while the latter is a grand tourer. The GT convertible should also be available as a base 456-hp model and as a 503-hp GT S version.

An AMG GT Black Series is still on the table, but likely won't arrive until the end of the GT's life cycle, as was the case for previous Black Series cars. The report also suggests a GT4 race car will debut at some point, slotting below the AMG GT3 racer that debuted last year with a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8.
