This Is the 1,100-HP V-8 Genesis You Didn’t See Coming
The X Skorpio shows Genesis taking its brand to a place you wouldn’t expect.
The scene plays out like a Range Rover ad: A Genesis slides around the sand dunes looking tough, confident, and capable. We’ve seen this type of image-building from a brand before, but there’s one enormous difference you’re gonna love: The Genesis X Skorpio is a mean-looking concept car with a 1,100-hp V-8 engine.

Trust us when we say this beast is as much fun to hear roaring across the desert as it is to watch ripping over the sand.
If you can’t buy this SUV or anything like it, though, what’s the point?
Read between the lines, and the Genesis X Skorpio concept tests the waters to see if the luxury brand might one day offer a credible alternative to high-priced luxury SUVs with off-road cred, including the Lexus GX and Range Rover.
Genesis has previewed this before with the Gran Equator, a concept previewing a G-Wagen rival coming in 2028. The luxury brand is only a decade old, so there’s plenty of time to evolve and expand what it stands for.
Too Late? Or Right on Trend?
Off-roading subbrands are almost everywhere, including Volvo’s Cross Country, Lexus’ Overtrail, and Jeep’s well, everything. That makes Genesis late to this party, but don’t count out the brand just yet.
“Everything has been done already,” Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis Chief Creative and Design Officer, said in an interview.
Maybe it’s still possible to make a dent with unique design. Adds Donckerwolke, “You don’t want to work in a place that has limited ambitions,” and Genesis has certainly dreamed big.
In terms of substance, half of the current Genesis lineup consists of former MotorTrend Car or SUV of the Year award winners. That’s ridiculously impressive. But two of those winners blend on-road sportiness with luxury. There’s no guarantee the luxury brand will find similar success with off-road trims of existing models or with a new model targeting that crowd.
That brings us back to the sand dunes and the Genesis X Skorpio concept resculpting them. This thing, along with the GV60 and GV70 Outdoors concepts, previews what Genesis thinks it can offer in this space.
If this isn’t your cup of tea, there’s always Genesis’ still-fresh Magma track-focused performance subbrand. Between those two subbrands and the upcoming GV90 three-row electric SUV, Genesis sure is busy.
