Formula One Releases Update on Michael Schumacher Progress

MotorTrend StaffWriter

Doctors have kept Michael Schumacher in a medically-induced coma since his ski accident on December 29, 2013. Last month, it was announced that Schumacher was being slowly revived from his coma, but that the "waking up" process could take a long time. The official Formula One site has released another update on Schumacher's condition, largely reiterating the points mentioned in the last update, namely, respecting the family's privacy, and appreciating fans' well-wishes.

Schumacher is considered by many to be the best driver in Formula One history, and is widely credited with popularizing F1 racing in his home country of Germany, with three of the sport's top drivers being German at the time of his first official retirement in 2006.

Schumacher was wearing a ski helmet at the time of his accident, and doctors have said he likely would not have survived had he not been wearing the helmet. In terms of Schumacher's long-term prognosis, little official information is known on his current condition and outlook. In the official statement, the family said "no day is like the next," and that they do "not wish to disclose medical details in order to protect Michael's privacy." The family concluded the official statement through Formula One by saying, "The important thing is not the speed of the recovery but that Michael's heal process progresses in a continuous and controlled way."
