Ferrari Officially Announces One-Off SP12 EC for Eric Clapton

One of the latest buzzwords among the ultra-luxury marques is "bespoke." In layman's English, it roughly translates to "custom-built" or "custom-designed." The degree of bespoke-ness varies by manufacturer, and can range anywhere from custom stitching, leather floormats, flamboyant paint colors, and a variety of other trim customization options. But rarely does it entail large-scale sheetmetal or mechanical changes. But the term is redefined with a Ferrari model built for Eric Clapton.

Ferrari has taken the bespoke concept to a new level with the Ferrari SP12 EC, a model based on the 458 Italia incorporating some styling details of the Ferrari 512 BB model, of which Clapton has owned three. The car had already been unofficially outed several months ago, but this is the first official look at the one-of-a-kind Ferrari. The legendary guitarist's wish was for a modern Ferrari with styling influences from the classic 512. Although not powered by a boxer 12-cylinder like the original 512 BB, the SP12 EC's front grille and dark lower body painting give it a striking resemblance to the 512, the predecessor to the over-the-top Ferrari Testarossa of the 1980s.

The car's styling was a collaboration between Ferrari, Pininfarina, and Ferrari's bespoke program. More details about Clapton's involvement in the creative process for the car can be found in the latest issue of the Ferrari Official Magazine.
