Dino Revival? Ferrari Planning New Twin-Turbo V-6 Model

The Ferrari family has a range-topper in the LaFerrari, and now the lineup is about to grow in the opposite direction. Senior features editor Jonny Lieberman recently learned from a source familiar with Ferrari's plans that the Prancing Horse brand will add a model powered by a twin-turbo V-6 to compete with such cars as the Mercedes-AMG GT, Porsche 911 Turbo S, and new McLaren 570S.

The car would cost around $180,000, which is right in line with the pricing of its intended competition. That's also a good deal less than the roughly $200,000 starting price of the hard-top convertible Ferrari California T, the Italian sports car maker's current lowest-priced car that's powered by a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V-8. There are no details on the car that would use the new six-cylinder, but it's possible Ferrari could revive the Dino name. With classic Dino models fetching record prices, now would be a good time to reintroduce the lower-priced sports car.

A report from our friends at AUTOMOBILE suggests the new engine will have a displacement of 2.9 liters in order to evade the heavy taxes that come with engines above 3.0 liters in China. Whatever the new twin-turbo V-6 is used in, Lieberman says we won't see it until 2019.
