Buick’s Boldest Ideas Are Happening in China—Just Look at the Electra Orbit
Created by GM Advanced Design Shanghai, the Electra Orbit makes callbacks to old rocket-age designs with a futuristic flair. Here in the U.S., the going hasn’t exactly been easy lately for Buick. It’s been struggling to connect with a younger audience as it attempts to try to carve out a niche for itself in several hyper competitive, near luxury segments. And so far, at least, the now all-SUV brand has yet to take any real chances in the style or powertrain departments.

But things are much different for the brand in China. There, Buick still offers the LaCrosse and Regal badged sedans there, along with unique vehicles including the Verano Pro sedan and multiple multi-purpose vehicles (aka minivans) on top of SUVs. It’s a broader, far more holistic set of offerings, one that parent General Motors let its Advanced Design Shanghai loose on yet again to produce another vision of what Buick could be in the not too distant future. The result is the stunning and polarizing Electra Orbit Concept.
This is far from the first Electra-branded exercise that Buick in China has been showing off recently. The Electra-L and Electra-LT sedan and wagon EV concepts were unveiled in 2024, and at the 2025 Shanghai show it rolled out the Electra GS concept. All these concepts have been luxurious and tech forward in their approaches, and from what we’ve seen of them thus far, they look dynamite. Although the Electra Orbit is clearly more of a flight of fancy from a concept perspective than the other Electras, it’s in line with what we’ve seen from where the Buick brand may be headed from a Chinese perspective.
The body of the Electra Orbit appears almost sedate at first blush, with a sleek, aerodynamic, and inoffensive look from the front. But once underway, its aero package is envisioned to launch it into, er, orbit, with a heaping helping of added downforce designed to guide the air around it better. Within the hood, a pair of large vents open to channel air up from the front end, while the lower nose transforms into a splitter, dropping down closer to the ground. The side skirts also lower downward to match the frontal area so air transitions smoothly to the now dropped rear diffuser. Above the rocket-age like boat tail, its most controversial view, a split rear wing lifts to provide some additional rear air direction and downforce for high-speed driving. You’ll also notice that the Buick logos on the center caps of the aerodynamic and lighted wheel covers remain upright.
