AMG Boss: “The Horsepower War is Over,” Lighter, More Efficient Models to Come
When the makers of a 661 hp, 738 lb-ft of torque monster say "the horsepower war is over," you listen. AMG head Volker Mornhinweg made the declaration today to Autocar, citing a requirement for lower emission vehicles.

"We are going to use other ways to extract better performance, including weight saving, engine optimization and alternative technologies," Mornhinweg said. The design focus change sounds a bit Colin Chapman to us, so we have no complaints.
Autocar reports that the next E63 AMG will be the first to reflect these changes; the sedan will weigh less than the previous generation and will offer a real manual transmission. AMG is pursuing a smaller-sized performance model that should slot below the C-class, furthering conjecture of a performance-oriented A-class model.
Well, if you're going to go out, you might as well go out on top.
