Amid all the hoopla over the Tesla Roadster, it would be easy to overlook another battery-electric vehicle posting impressive numbers--the latest from AC Propulsion. Its converted Scion xB offers an estimated 0-to-60 performance of seven seconds, a range of 140 to 180 miles, and a recharge time of two hours from a 240-volt, 80-amp source.

A "bidirectional grid interface" allows you to charge the batteries at night, then replenish the grid on sweltering afternoons when you're not planning to go anywhere. The car has 5300 li-ion laptop-type batteries neatly concealed beneath the seats providing the juice.

Yet, with a four-door model still just a gleam in Tesla Motors's eye, the AC xB may be your best bet to simultaneously make points with three of your closest petroleum-allergic friends.
