Hennessey Blackbird First Look: 800+HP V-8, 6-Speed Manual, Zero Screens
This hypercar skips hybrid or EV tech in favor of a screaming engine and a gated manual.
Tired of porky hypercars filled to brimming with batteries, motors, screens, and computers constantly doing their gol-dangedest to drive the car for you? Well, Texas’ favorite son John Hennessey has got you covered with his third hypercar offering: the Hennessey Blackbird, of which only 71 will be built. See, the thing is heavily influenced by the retired Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft.

A Rare K.I.S.S. Hypercar
Not only does the Hennessey Blackbird eschew hybridization and screens of any type, it also keeps things simple by doing without turbochargers and automatic gear selection. That’s right, this naturally aspirated hypercar features a row-your-own six-speed manual gearbox, complete with visible linkage. The controls are analog, and there’s even a physical insert-and-twist ignition key. The car does, however, include antilock braking and traction control to make the most of the grip provided by the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
Free-Breathing, 9,000-RPM Ilmor V-8
The initial press release is conspicuously light on engine specifics. Beyond an 800–850-hp target and a redline exceeding 9,000 rpm, Hennessey says little about the Ilmor-developed 6.2-liter V-8's architecture. We'd wager it retains at least the bore spacing and basic dimensions of GM's small-block, though likely with bespoke cylinder heads—and perhaps even a DOHC valvetrain. (Ilmor has developed lots of engines based on that small-block, making it plausible that it retains GM spacing or other core dimensions to simplify manufacturing.) No torque specs are provided, but we’re promised the naturally aspirated engine—which Hennessey claims is the highest-revving and most powerful naturally aspirated road-car V-8—responds with uncanny immediacy.
The Hennessey Blackbird is slated to feature a carbon-fiber tub clad in carbon-fiber bodywork, all of which is expected to keep “dry weight” under 3,000 pounds. The suspension is adaptive, utilizing inboard linkage-controlled springs and shocks.
