What It Is

Kia is on a mission to have an electric lineup, and one of the staples will be the Kia EV8, a high-performance sedan that pays tribute to the defunct Stinger sport sedan. The EV8 will be a significant product for the Korean company, as it will deliver massive power and have one of the most advanced architectures in the electric vehicle landscape.
Earlier this year, we reported Kia is cooking up more hybrid and electric SUVs, with a revamped lineup by 2030. The 2027 EV8 might be a lone wolf, as sedans aren’t exactly a hot commodity in the market. But the car will be a big part of the overall portfolio, and we’re sure it will be an interesting prospect for enthusiasts.
Why it Matters
Kia introduced three all-new electric cars globally in 2023, and the EV3 is planned for later this year. Kia’s plan continues with five new global EV launches in 2025, one in 2026, and two in 2027. While these launches will significantly strengthen the brand, Kia doesn’t plan to stop production of internal combustion engines. In fact, it has said it plans to launch EVs, hybrids, and ICE vehicles concurrently.
Although the Stinger didn’t sell in huge numbers, the sedan and its rear-drive chassis had a good run in America. It shared its chassis with the Genesis G70, but the Stinger’s compliant suspension was a key differentiator. We don’t know whether Genesis plans to introduce an EV8 cousin, but we expect both cars to be reasonably different if it does.
Platform and Powertrain
The EV8 will be based on Hyundai Motor Group’s new electric vehicle architecture, dubbed Integrated Modular Architecture and announced earlier this year. The upcoming Genesis GV90 is the first example expected to use this platform, followed by Hyundai and Kia models. This is great news for Kia, as the new platform will allow it to push out impressive power and deliver strong overall performance. The leaked documents indicate the EV8 will make up to 603 hp, and while that will likely be for the top-trim variant, it’s a good bump over the existing EV6 GT’s 576 hp.
In typical Kia fashion, expect several options for powertrains and batteries. The new platform should carry significant technological advancements not seen in today’s E-GMP platform, allowing it to have more flexibility and efficiency. Hyundai says the platform will accommodate LFP batteries, as well as an AI-based battery management system to ensure real-time monitoring and diagnosis of battery conditions.
