Rivian's New Self-Driving Tech for R1 and R2 Beats Tesla on Cost—Big Time
Rivian’s latest technology will allow hands-free autonomous driving on all second-gen R1 SUVs and trucks and even fuller autonomy on the R2.
Driving a car may seem like a cakewalk to a human, but for a computer it’s anything but. That’s why brands like Rivian must dedicate so much time and so many resources to making the decades-long dream of eyes-off autonomous ome true. Rivian says it’s on the verge of achieving just that, full eyes-off-the-road self-driving capability, and that it will debut Level 3 conditional autonomy in late 2026 on the R2.

To do so, Rivian will lean on lidar in addition to cameras and other sensors to enable a high degree of hands-off self-driving. And R1-series owners won’t be left out. Rivian is also introducing Autonomy Plus, a “Level 2++” hands-free driving platform in early 2026 for its electric SUVs and electric trucks.
Autonomy Plus will allow second-generation R1s to drive themselves in more places, with your hands off the wheel for longer stretches. Rivian describes it as a “Universal Hands-Free” system, but to be clear, Autonomy Plus is still Level 2++—meaning it still requires an attentive human behind the wheel, ready to take control at any moment.
It’s part of Rivian’s Autonomy Platform Large Driving Model (LDM), a software-first approach trained much like a Large Language Model form of AI. The system uses the existing cameras and sensors within the R1 to train and improve its performance over time. Because it uses hardware that’s already installed, Rivian can roll out this higher-level capability to second-gen R1s without making any fundamental changes.
Autonomy Plus launches in early 2026 and will cover 3.5 million miles of mapped roads across the U.S. and Canada. It can also operate on off-highway roads as long as lane markings are clear. If you’re thinking this sounds similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, you’re not totally off—but FSD currently offers more fully autonomous features like summoning the car from a parking spot.
Rivian’s pricing is significantly lower, though:
- $2,500 one-time purchase, or
- $49.99/month subscription
Compared to Tesla FSD’s $8,000 or $99/month, Rivian’s version is a relative steal.
More Than Just Autonomous Driving
Autonomy Plus will launch alongside Rivian Assistant, a “next-generation” voice interface available on both first- and second-generation R1s. Built on the Rivian Unified Intelligence (RUI) platform—a multi-modal, multi-LLM architecture—Rivian Assistant lets owners talk to their vehicles in natural language, operate third-party apps, and help the R1 adapt to their routines and needs.
RUI also aids Rivian technicians with diagnostics by storing telemetry history and identifying complex issues. Rivian plans to expand RUI into the mobile app as well, enabling and improving self-service diagnostics for owners.
