Toyota Slashes bZ4X EV's Price for 2025, Adds Content
The range-challenged electric Toyota aims to be a better value.
Seeing the writing on the wall, Toyota has adjusted pricing for its bZ4X electric SUV downward. The bZ4X, an electric SUV with a name brought to you by a cat walking across a keyboard in Toyota's Plano, Texas, headquarters, has been met with lukewarm reception by media and buyers alike, mostly because of its so-so driving range and early teething issues. Introduced for 2023, the bZ4X tops out at 252 miles of range in front-wheel-drive form; all-wheel-drive examples and nicer trim levels drop that figure to as low as 222 miles.

Those numbers aren't horrific, but they're low for the $44,665 and up Toyota was charging (and especially so in a world where Chevy's outgoing Bolt delivered similar performance but for tens of thousands less, and a similarly priced Tesla Model Y blows it out of the water). So Toyota has slashed bZ4X MSRPs for 2025, lopping $6,000 off the entry-level bZ4X XLE trim level's price tag and $5,380 from the higher-end bZ4X Limited's ask. Factor in reduced destination charges for 2025, and the effective cost is even lower. This move alone shifts the Toyota's value quotient considerably in the right direction, though we should point out that at the time of this story's publication, the automaker's website advertises up to "11,500 cash back" on 2024 model-year examples.
Promotions come and go, though, so it's nice to see the bZ4X's MSRP go down. Now starting at $38,465, the bZ4X XLE with front-wheel drive (so, a single motor driving the front wheels) comfortably undercuts key competitors such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Adding a second drive motor for all-wheel drive ups the bZ4X's price to $40,545. So drastic are the Toyota's price cuts that now you can buy a fully loaded Limited version for only barely more than an entry-level XLE model cost last year. Toyota also has added a Nightshade edition for 2025, which includes a bunch of blacked-out trim pieces and wheels and builds on the XLE trim; its price is $41,815, and all-wheel drive is included.

Toyota also throws in one year of complimentary EVgo public charging, while the Limited grade improves with standard lane-keep assist, Traffic Jam Assist, and lane-change assist. Even without further improvements, Toyota has made the bZ4X more palatable overnight: This SUV remains quiet, drives well, and is right-sized. Its range and charging speeds may be mediocre, but a different price brings different expectations, and a sub-$40K MSRP goes a long way toward improving the bZ4X's value proposition.
A lifelong car enthusiast, I stumbled into this line of work essentially by accident after discovering a job posting for an intern position at Car and Driver while at college. My start may have been a compelling alternative to working in a University of Michigan dining hall, but a decade and a half later, here I am reviewing cars; judging our Car, Truck, and Performance Vehicle of the Year contests; and shaping MotorTrend’s daily coverage of the automotive industry.
