The 2025 Audi A5 Replaces the A4 Sedan, Is More Expensive

The A4 sedan is dead in place of just the A5, which is priced higher than that sedan but less than the old A5 Sportback.

Audi has a new internal-combustion car platform—and the A4, a brand mainstay, won't be on it. Instead, we're getting the updated 2025 Audi A5 sedan, which is roughly the same size and costs slightly more while trading the A4's trunk for a hatchback and slicker design. The A5 isn't new, at least in concept, but instead of living alongside the A4 as it did before, it's apparently close enough to it that Audi thinks most shoppers can swing the difference and live with the 5 alone.

So, what's this transition going to cost? The outgoing Audi A4 started at $45,395, and the new 2025 Audi A5 now starts at $48,995, generating a gulf of $3,600 in difference. On the other hand, the new four-door A5 actually costs less than its direct forebear, the A5 Sportback, itself a coupe-like, hatchback spinoff of the A4. (By the way, that Sportback naming scheme has been dropped in favor of just "A5" here in America—other parts of the world will get an Avant wagon, too.) The previous-generation A5 Sportback's pricing started at a higher $49,695. Somewhat confusingly, there is a 2025 model-year A5 Sportback listed on Audi's consumer website—as well as 2025 A4s, though all of those are, in effect, being replaced by the new A5 for now.

However, all of those vehicles (at least the four-door versions) have always been very similar in size. The A5 always offered the sportier options of a similar A4 package at a slight premium. Now it's just baked in, since there is only the A5.

You also get more power with the 2025 A5, with 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder aided by a 48-volt hybrid system, compared to the outgoing A4's 261 hp and 273 lb-ft. The new S5 trim, which hasn't been priced yet, is also good for 362 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, besting the old S4 and S5 Sportback's 349 hp and 369 lb-ft. We should learn more about the new S5's pricing closer to production in summer of this year.
