2022 Mercedes-AMG SL First Look: Big Performance, Big Luxury
V-8s, AWD, and Hydraulic Roll Control—AMG boosts performance and comfort in the new SL.We caught a ride in the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL-Class back in September, while a half-dozen prototypes underwent final shakedown testing at altitude. Now Affalterbach has shared more of the specifics about how the first AMG-developed Mercedes SL aims to become the sportiest SL-Class since the original while simultaneously improving on the comfort that has long been the hallmark of the popular Mercedes-Benz model.

First, the Luxury Stuff
Right off the bat, the thing to know is that this new SL is a 2+2, the first such layout for the model since the R129 left production in 1989. Mercedes says folks as tall as 4 feet, 11 inches can be accommodated in the rear seats, but legroom is extremely tight—as such, figure on this being more of additional space to carry luggage or shopping. As you'd expect of a modern Mercedes, there's plenty of digital acreage inside, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster incorporated into an aviation-themed dashboard layout. The center stack serves up a nearly square, 11.9-inch touchscreen that will look familiar to anyone who's seen the most recent S-Class interior. This screen can be adjusted to move vertically between 12 and 32 degrees, the idea being to reduce glare when the new SL's soft top is down.
Below the main infotainment screen, the center console flows between front and rear occupants and incorporates a sort of NACA duct shape in the application of its materials. Mercedes says this will become a signature AMG design element moving forward. The entire interior was designed, according to Mercedes, with topography and layering in mind, with a goal of making things appear lighter and less voluminous. Sixty-four colors of ambient lighting are at your fingertips, while the MBUX digital assistant is aboard to respond to verbal commands. The usual delights such as massaging seats are of course present and accounted for.
The AMG seats have integrated headrests as well as—naturally—Mercedes' traditional Airscarf neck vents, which blow warm air onto the heads and necks of occupants. For racier buyers, harder-core AMG Performance seats with active bolstering are available as an option, and the car has AMG Performance and "AMG TRACK PACE"—we're not sure why that one needs to be shouted—features not found in "Mercedes-Benz" cars, as opposed to "Mercedes-AMG" ones. AMG Performance offers up a detailed look at the car's vital systems and fluids, while AMG TRACK PACE records on-track performance, including up to 80 telemetry data points 10 times per second. Twelve paint colors are on offer, including exclusive Hyper Blue and matte Monza Grey hues, as are three top colors, myriad leather upholsteries for the cabin, and several wheel designs in 20- and 21-inch sizes.
Two Flavors of V-8 Power
At launch, all 2022 Mercedes-AMG SLs will be powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter M177 AMG V-8. The "entry level" car will be the SL55, with 469 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, while the SL63 will make 577 hp and 590 lb-ft. The difference is attributable primarily to higher turbo-boost pressure and improved internal air flow in the SL63, as well as modified engine software. Future SL models for global markets will be powered by AMG's 2.0-liter turbo M139 engine, which today produces as much as 416 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in other applications. Mercedes-AMG also promises to deliver a performance-oriented plug-in hybrid model.
Standard All-Wheel Drive, MCT
All-wheel drive will be standard on all 2022 Mercedes-AMG SLs to ensure owners can take the cars on ski trips, and to better deliver all of the engines' peak torque. This illustrates another major difference between the SL and the AMG GT Roadster, with which this new car shares virtually nothing.
